BANGKOK, 7 April 2019 (NNT) - The Ministry of Industry plans to submit to the cabinet a measure to systematically cope with the burning of sugar cane to the extent that sugarcane growers stop burning in three years.
Industry Ministry Permanent Secretary Phasu Loharachun said the measures which will be proposed to the cabinet calls for the implementation in 2019/2020 season and sugar mills to buy a maximum of 30% of burned sugarcane per day, followed by a maximum of 20% per day in 2020/2021 season and a maximum of 5% per day in 2021/2022 season. No burned sugarcane will be available for sales after the three-years time as planned.
However, the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) will provide two billion baht in loans per annum for sugar cane growers, groups of sugarcane growers, agricultural cooperatives, sugarcane growers associations and community enterprises for three years time during which the measure is being implemented. The interest rates which are yet to be approved by the cabinet will be collected by 4% per annum for which the government will pay to the BAAC whereas those borrowers will pay 1% per annum.
Besides, the machinery in the ownership of the sugarcane growers may be registered at the Department of Industrial Works for use as collateral for bank loans.
