Pattaya under water following two hours of heavy rain

    Nation
The seaside city of Pattaya was under water early Tuesday afternoon following two hours of heavy downpours.

The rains started at about 11am and continued for two hours, leaving most roads under water between 30 centimetres and one metre deep, as the rainwater could not be drained fast enough.

Several sections of road were impassable to passenger cars.

Sukhumvit Road, which runs through Pattaya, was under water more than a metre deep, which made it impassable for both cars and motorcycles.

Police and Pattaya city officials had to set up barricades to prevent motorists from trying to enter the flooded sections, after several cars suffered engine breakdowns in the deep water.

Several roads in the heart of Pattaya were under water 30cm to 50cm deep, including Pattaya 3 Road, Soi Bua Khao and Pattaya Beach Road.

Officials expected the water to flow into the sea about an hour after the rains stopped.

    Deja vu.

It will be the same next year, the year after and every year until they actually do something about it. How about some decent drains?

Bilions of baht spent on drains and infra-structure and the locals just drop their rubbish in the waterways blocking up all the channels.

When I drove back from Beach Road today the blocked rain water was pumping upwards out ot the drain grates by at least 300 cm.

Educating the Thais is needed desperately!

And to tell them where to dump their shit which may cost them a few baht so that aint gunna happen!

    Fucking monkeys.

They simply need pumping stations linked to the storm drains. Same happens in Korat annually.

That Bangkok Jack site reckons its to do with the street food stalls chucking their old food and oil down the drains and the moto taxi guys turning up for their shift and placimg and leaving carpets over the drains to stop the stink.

I wondered why they do that. Here, it's not just the moto guys, but many shops do it too.

The current flooding arises through a combination of not replacing a network of drains that were designed for a population a fraction of the size it is now and the installation of new drainage systems following the construction of new roads that feature pipes that are too small in diameter to cope with the tropical rainfall runoff that occurs in these latitudes.

Essentially, the flooding is as a consequence of Thai stupidity in ignoring inevitability until it reaches a degree when it is an emergency but even then they will only move from their indolence if it stops commerce significantly or affects someone important.

The main conurbation of Naklua/Pattaya/Pratumnak delineated by the line of the Sukhumvit Road is developed on an escarpment that travels downwards to the sea. Before the modern development that finally gathered pace in the 1980s, runoff simply wended its way through historical courses draining into the sea but these are now all blocked by development. By not developing a proper drainage strategy to cope with the transition from village to city status, the local authority, and what passes for its administration, has permitted a disastrous situation that can only worsen. And yet, they have spent hundreds of millions of baht on constructing an artificial beach that everyone knows will be dragged back into the sea when the monsoon storms attack it. They could reduce the scale of the problem if they constructed catchment areas in the hinterland to hold seasonal downpour -induced flooding but that would require planning and the seizure of land that will be rendered useless for commercial purposes which is why of course it cannot happen.

    They truly are the worst.

Could do with a bit of that rain up this way.

A bit selfish of Pattaya really.

Just visiting and checking on some investments, you nosy old cnut.

A bit I deliberately left out because your mate taxexile & Co. keep tabs on such things but then I don't suppose it really matters if they add that tidbit to the file.

It's surely something more behind this to cause such problem, not properly designed/situated and/or dimensioned ...
