Gays? No such thing in our country, says Malaysian Tourism Ministe

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia's Tourism Minister caused consternation in Germany when he reportedly said there are no gays in Malaysia.

According to German broadcaster Deutsche Welle, Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi - who was in the European country for the ITB Berlin travel fair - was asked by the German media whether Malaysia will welcome gays.

"I don't think we have anything like that in our country," he said.

Deutsche Welle also claimed that Mr Mohamaddin had sidestepped a question of whether Malaysia is a safe destination for homosexuals and Jews.

An aide to the minister later told news portal Malaysiakini that the statement was Mr Mohamaddin's personal views although it was in line with the Pakatan Harapan government's stance of not recognising LGBT culture.

Nevertheless, the aide, who wanted to remain anonymous, said "tourists coming to Malaysia like any other country are welcome regardless of their creed, sexuality, religion or colour.”

Concerns have been mounting in Malaysia, a multi-ethnic country where some 60 per cent of the population is Muslim, about a deteriorating climate for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

Last September, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said his country cannot accept same-sex marriage or LGBT rights.

"In Malaysia, there are some things we cannot accept, even though it is seen as human rights in Western countries," he had said. "We cannot accept LGBT, marriage between men and men, women and women."

Islamic affairs minister Mujahid Yusof Rawa too has spoken out against homosexuals and ordered pictures of LGBT activists to be removed from a public exhibition.

The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) has estimated the number of LGBT people in the country to be at 310,000, although it later admitted that the amount has not been verified by the Health ministry.

NZ's first transgender Member of Parliament would be a good one. Create a terrible diplomatic incident if she wasn't treated well.

He can take them in a jar and put them on the table.

But better take some medical documentation for getting them back into nz if the kiwi customs bust your balls over everything like they do in aussie.

Two rug-munchers went under the lash for canyon-yodelling in a parked car in September. I'd imagine the urge among Malays to get bent is somewhat stifled by the cane and the shame.

    I have a feeling I'll regret asking this, but...why?

Nail polish? Or maybe one of those "if your ring finger is longer than your middle finger..." type things.

...one place to start the count might be twitter: lots of virulently gay activity and posting of anti-Muslim sexual postures...in fact, I frequently turn off my twitter feed as it's all so...distracting...

Nice to see this more enlightened version of Islam. Either that or it was the swordsmans day off.

...official Muslim pettiness in Malaysia seems to be a circling of the cultural wagons against possibly more open-minded local Chinese and Indians as well as the usual Islamic desire to wall itself off from a world that sees things differently...a losing proposition when holier-than-thou bureaucrats are facing the internet...

Seems to me the difference between an estimated 310k LGBT by one office and a political/religious image saving zero by another is quite substantial.

It could just be a misinterpretation.

Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi was asked by the German media whether Malaysia will welcome gays.

He replied: "I don't think we have anything like that in our country."

Interpreted as: "there are no gays in Malaysia."

However, he might have been more literal in his reply: "We don't welcome gays in Malaysia." Or "We don't put the red carpet out for gays visiting Malaysia."

    Not the same.

Manipulating language is an art form, allowing the controller to present the same message in different lights according to their agenda/interpretation/needs/wishes.

I cringe whenever media interviewers begin a question with, 'so you're saying...', or 'but isn't it true that...', though they often get away with prodding the viewer into the wrong direction.
