Soldiers fired automatic weapons into a crowd of anti-government demonstrators today as tens of thousands of pro-democracy protesters in Burma's main city braved a crackdown that has drawn international appeals for restraint by the ruling military junta.
Witnesses told The Associated Press that after soldiers fired into a crowd near a bridge across the Pazundaung River on the east side of downtown Rangoon, five men were arrested and severely beaten by soldiers.
Thousands of protesters ran through the streets after the shots rang out. Bloody sandals were left lying the road.

More people joining in Sule
"Now there are about 30,000 to 40,000 have gathered in Sule. We don't know what will happen. At the moment, soldiers are shooting from above. The people are unhappy and are now gathering on the road. There are a lot of shootings, but we don't know how many died. Members of NLD arrested across the country. It is really bad. And more people are joining the protest," an eyewitness told Mizzima.

In pictures: Burma protests
Thursday, 27 September 2007, 11:21 GMT 12:21 UK
Confrontations between Burmese security forces and protesters are continuing for a 10th day.
Protesters gathered in the main city, Rangoon, early on Thursday, braced for more clashes with security forces.
Troops set up barbed wire barricades around flashpoints in the capital, such as Shwedagon Pagoda and the city hall.
There seemed to be fewer monks on the streets and more ordinary people take part in the protests. Several hundred monks were arrested overnight in raids.
During the night, Burmese troops stormed six monasteries, smashing windows and doors and beating monks.
Some monks escaped, but several hundred were taken away in military trucks.
China has said it is extremely concerned and called on all parties to exercise restraint.

Residents surround security forces at raided monastery
Sep 27, 2007
(DVB)–Local residents in South Okkalapa township have surrounded security forces who returned to Ngway Kyar Yan monastery to arrest the abbot following last night’s raids.
At least 130 monks were detained in the raid on the monastery, and personal belongings including robes, rice and 2,000,000 Kyat in cash were seized.
Security forces returned at around noon today to arrest the abbot and took up positions surrounding the monastery.
But hundreds of thousands of local residents, outraged by the raids, surrounded the troops, shouting anti-government slogans and demanding the immediate release of the detained monks.
A large group of people also assembled at the junction of Weizayanar and Dhittsar roads.
“The military is surrounding the monastery and firing warning shots to disperse the crowds, but people are standing firm,” said a bystander.
The latest reports from the scene say that more people are joining the crowds.

Japanese photographer killed, another foreign journalist injured
Reporters Without Borders is appalled by the death of a Japanese news photographer on the streets of Rangoon this morning.
Another foreign journalist was reportedly injured.
The press casualties came after the security forces opened fire on demonstrators near the Tarder Hotel in the centre of Rangoon.
As the security forces step up their crackdown by firing on crowds and arresting hundreds of monks and pro-democracy activists, communications continue to be severely disrupted by the authorities.

Myanmar junta says shows "restraint" on protests
Thu Sep 27, 2007 6:48pm IST
BANGKOK (Reuters) - Myanmar's junta said on Thursday it was showing restraint in dealing with the biggest uprising against military rule in nearly 20 years, a diplomat said.
Yangon-based diplomats called to a meeting with a deputy foreign minister in Myanmar's new capital, Naypyidaw, were told "'the government was committed to showing restraint in its response to the provocations', as he called them", the diplomat said.
At least 5 people were killed, including a Japanese photographer, in Yangon on Thursday as the junta intensified its two-day crackdown by raiding monasteries and ordering protesters off the streets or risk being be shot.
The minister blamed the protests, which began in mid-August with sporadic civilian marches against shock increases in fuel prices, on "internal and external destructive elements", the diplomat said.

EU should boycott Olympics
Reuters
Published: Thursday, September 27, 2007
BRUSSELS, Sept 27 (Reuters) - European Union countries should boycott the 2008 Beijing Olympics unless China intervenes in Myanmar, an EU lawmaker said on Thursday.
The vice president of the European Parliament Edward McMillan-Scott will write to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and the EU’s Portuguese presidency asking them to discuss whether athletes should oppose the Beijing games.
The British Conservative MEP is backed by the assembly’s largest political group — the centre-right European People’s Party, which includes the government parties of France and Germany — and the Liberal grouping within the EU legislature.
"The consensus around the European Parliament is that China is the key. China is the puppet master of Burma," McMillan-Scott told Reuters in a telephone interview.
"The Olympics is the only real lever we have to make China act. The civilised world must seriously consider shunning China by using the Beijing Olympics to send the clear message that such abuses of human rights are not acceptable."

ANALYSIS-India breaks silence on Myanmar, hedges its bets
27 Sep 2007
By Simon Denyer
NEW DELHI, Sept 27 (Reuters) - India may have broken its silence on Myanmar with a carefully nuanced call for political reform, but New Delhi has shown little sign of abandoning the military regime despite growing pressure and protests.
Officials said the Indian government felt it had to speak up and call for national reconciliation on Wednesday as Myanmar troops fired on protesters, and as the United States and Europe asked the U.N. Security Council to consider sanctions.
"It is like hedging one's bets," an Indian foreign ministry official said. "I really don't think there has been a major shift in our position.
"We probably kept quiet all this while because this regime was not faltering so far. But after yesterday, it is all up in the air. There is also the pressure of the EU-U.S. resolution."
In 1988, India was one of the staunchest supporters of Myanmar's pro-democracy movement, but a new, pragmatic approach to foreign policy saw those ties cut in the early 1990s.
Desperate to get its hands on Myanmar's gas to meet its growing energy needs, and determined to counter Chinese influence, India has instead courted Myanmar's generals.
