Bikes are low compared to vans. Force hitting the bottom of the van would shift it sideways, not flip it. From the photos, you can see that the bike hit low. Its just strange, thats all.

Right. I was wrong. Got mixed up.
Very curious. Nonetheless, the bike was not in a thousand pieces, so what happened there? Unless the van driver over-corrected, thereby causing the right topple?

Yeah but they hit a bit higher. That's why they ended up in the van I reckon.

Barring exceptional circumstances, there are two major factors that cause foreigners to have accidents like this here.

1: In many western countries, there are no u-turns on large roads (that particular road has 3 lanes). The Bang Na Trad road is a fast "motorway" but has regular u-turns all the way from BKK to Chonburi, where slow moving vehicles travelling in the opposite direction can turn into the fast lane (at very slow speed) of the opposing lanes. This is standard here, and you can't call it wrong, because that's just the way it is here, but most foreigners just don't account for it.

2: Here, like in many other countries around the world, the tradition for many of them (not all), is that the person behind (I.e reaching the point second), must give way to the person who reaches the point first. Westerners on the whole take into regard the speed of the following/oncoming vehicle, and yield if the basic physics of the situation require it.

    I know that.

Sorry, if it wasn't clear enough.

I was using that road as an example of the problem.

The problem is that third world nationals can't fucking drive and do the most stupid shit you can imagine.

When I first arrived in the Middle East I didn't have a license, and this was the first thing my instructor taught me.

If you are going down a dual carriageway with right of way, and someone pulls up at a junction, in the West they will usually wait until you have passed and then pull out when the traffic is clear.

If you are going down a dual carriageway with right of way, and someone pulls up at a junction, in places like Thailand they will wait until you are too close to stop and then pull out in front of you.

If you are planning on making a right turn, in the West you would indicate, wait until there is no oncoming traffic, check your mirrors and turn.

If you are planning on making a right turn, in places like Thailand you just turn and let the other fucker worry about stopping.

It's just shit education and shit enforcement.

So if you want to drive in these places, you have to practice defensive driving and assume the rest of the road users are fucking idiots and will do the most cretinous thing imaginable, even if you think a fucking five year old would have the common sense not to do it.

These boys were probably ticking along at a nice speed but with their lights on, probably saw the van before it turned, but just about had time to say "OH FUCK" in Hungarian.

(Which according to Google Translate is "Ó, Bassza meg!").

When I first arrived here only "big" bikes had daytime running headlights. Then the authorities decided in their wisdom decided all bike should have them.

So now when drivers see a single headlight they think it is Lung traveling at 40 kph. Not a bike traveling at 80 kph plus. The net result is worse for everyone.
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?
I apologize if any offence was caused. unless it was intended.

Not a significant issue in this case.

Having said that, it wasn't going very fast that killed our two Hungarian chums, but stopping very quickly.

Anyone who thinks these two were not screaming along at full pelt from a drag race start from the lights is daft. They would not turn over that truck tootling along at 60kph.

Chiang Mai's attempts to educate the public is laudable but ultimately futile when one considers the Thai are cognitively incapable of learning from experience. They are quite simply too stupid.

I'm sure they release them just for comedy value.

Most of them are late at night, pissed, jumping red lights.

Then why is the bike not a crumpled piece of mangled metal? The van had to be already tipping for some reason.
For sure they were hurtling along somewhat, but it is a daft person who thinks it was at at full pelt with that minimal damage to the bike and point of impact so low.
It doesn't take particularly great speed to kill a rider.

Gotta love the turning right from a left hand position in front of ongoing vehicles. Happens all the time.

If the van driver had stopped before turning right, then with the front wheels turned already, gunned it, would that cause rightwards sway?

The frame of the bike would be quite rigid. I'd bet the front forks are completely f#%ked though.
From the look of the van, it has also absorbed a lot of the impact.
There's no way they were doing 60kph.

BMW S 1000 XR is capable of 0-100kph in less than 3 seconds.

It's quite likely they braked late and hard, the bike hitting the van at an angle already in a slide.

If sliding at speed could easily lift it over.

Don't forget the two bodies hitting the van at speed: The 2 X 80kg missiles would have hit the van higher up than the bike did.
