Rahaf al-Qunun: Saudi teen granted asylum in Canada

A Saudi woman who fled her family and became stranded at Bangkok's main airport is flying to Canada after being granted asylum status.

Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun, 18, had been trying to reach Australia via Bangkok, but was initially told to return to Kuwait, where her family were waiting.

She refused to fly back and barricaded herself into her airport hotel room, attracting international attention.

She said she had renounced Islam, which is punishable by death in Saudi Arabia.

The UN's refugee agency has said it considers her to be a legitimate refugee.

Refugee status is normally granted by governments, but the UNHCR can grant it where states are "unable or unwilling to do so", according to its website.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters: "Canada has been unequivocal that we will always stand up for human rights and women's rights around the world. When the UN made a request of us that we grant Ms Al-Qunun asylum, we accepted."
What happened to Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun?

She was on a trip to Kuwait with her family, when she fled on a flight to Bangkok.

She said she intended to take a connecting flight to Australia - and had an Australian visa - but that her passport was seized by a Saudi diplomat when he met her coming off the flight at Suvarnabhumi airport, leaving her stranded.

A Saudi envoy in Bangkok denied any official Saudi involvement in Ms Mohammed al-Qunun's detention.

    We didn't want her anyway.

Why would she want to go to Australia when it's full of Lebos?

She wants to get away from low rent Arab men.

Can't see why they would. I imagine many women in Yemen don't even know there's a world beyond their village to escape into.

And probably more than a couple have been brought up believing their life is just as it should be because that's how it is. Never underestimate the power of learned helplessness.

This is a very true and powerful situation and why rich Westerners are often unhappy while poor peasants are happy. It's not what you've got, it's what you've been taught to believe is sufficient.

In fairness, she did reach out to Canada - it was the Aussies who took it upon themselves to intervene; they should not take it personally and should keep up the good work.

Granted, the thought has occurred as I'd definitely hit that.

However, she'll most likely get a date from a minted Toronto millennial in less than 2 weeks.

no we should take it personally and have a fcuking good look at ourselves

if the wench had had a beard and not posted her selfie with the no-dog filter on she would not have gotten as far as she did

Hakeem Al-araibi is still locked up in Bangkok and Australians have not been so outspoken about getting him released

How do you know it was a sham trial?

Agreed that it seems a bit minor for a red notice though.

The Saudi teen who fled her family and grabbed global attention with a dramatic series of near real-time tweets arrived in Canada on Saturday after being granted asylum there.

Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun ran away earlier this month while traveling in Kuwait. The 18-year-old said her family subjected her to psychological and physical abuse and that she planned to flee to Australia to seek asylum.

She was stopped at an airport in Thailand, however, but barricaded herself in a hotel room there rather than board a scheduled flight back to Kuwait. From the room, she took to Twitter
with the help of friends, where news of her plight spread and attracted the attention of Human Rights Watch and the United Nations Refugee Agency, which asked Canada to give her asylum.

    "
Saudi women fleeing their families can face severe violence from relatives, deprivation of liberty, and other serious harm if returned against their will," Michael Page, deputy Middle East and North Africa director at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement on Jan. 6.

Yesterday, after Canada confirmed she'd been given a safe haven there, al-Qunun
tweeted to her more than 150,000 Twitter followers.

"I would like to thank you people for supporting me and saiving (sic) my life," she wrote. "Truly I have never dreamed of this love and support. You are the spark that would motivate me to be a better person."

The Saudi embassy in Washington didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Just a tad. Baldrick has a point about looks, but he has overlooked the fact that this girl had Twitter, 150,000 followers worth of Twitter, which would make a difference regardless of gender and looks.
Also, the soccer guy doesn't have the notorious "she'll be killed for apostasy" dog whistle, just the "disappeared for politics" muted dog whistle.

There is a little bit more to it than that. Like who owns a shitload of property around Thailand and who has exploration concessions in Bahrain.
