Usually, when a citizen gets in problem in another country, he (she) will seek for a help at his (her) kind embassy. They surely will have a spare room, sometimes totally insulated from the outside signals.

I do not understand why in this case such secure procedure was not followed...

The Saudi teenager who barricaded herself in a Bangkok airport hotel and begged for asylum from Australia could have her wish granted.

Australia confirmed on Tuesday night that it was deeply concerned about the plight of Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun, 18, and confirmed it would likely grant her a humanitarian visa – if the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) determined her claims are genuine.

However, her case has also raised questions over why Australia has moved so swiftly to open the door for refugee protection for the social media-savvy teenager as thousands of other asylum seekers languish without resettlement.

“The Australian government is pleased that Ms Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun is having her claim for protection assessed by the UNHCR,” a spokesperson for the Department of Home Affairs said.

“The government has made representations to the Thai government and the Bangkok office of the UNHCR about its serious concerns on this matter and the need for Ms Alqunun’s claim to be assessed expeditiously.

“Any application by Ms Alqunun for a humanitarian visa will be carefully considered once the UNHCR process has concluded.”

Australian officials stressed the normal security checks would apply.

A moronic statement even by your standards.

Whatever country you are in, you are bound by the laws of that country (unless you have diplomatic immunity).

Hope the Thais don't do what the Philippines did a few years ago and handed over a female Saudi at Manila airport
to some Saudi goons who flew her back home never to be heard of again.

Really, she's subject to Thai laws whilst in Thailand. One lives and learns from the oracles here on TD.

One wonders why then you oracles introduced a SA law, regarding a person subject to Thai laws into the thread.

Not a schoolboy diversion one hopes.

There's a slight difference between Thai law and the application of Thai law, which often depends on factors including and not limited to simple economics.

^ This is definitely the sort of stuff you should stick to.

The avoidance of making a complete dick of yourself in English (and I suspect any other language) is beyond you with most other topics.

Well this will piss off the Saudis.

Saudi teenager Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun has been found to be a refugee by the United Nations, and the Australian government will now consider her asylum request, according to the Department of Home Affairs.

The 18-year-old woman barricaded herself in a Bangkok airport hotel roomon Sunday to prevent her forcible return to Saudi Arabia, where she claims her family will kill her because she has renounced Islam.

On Wednesday, the UN high commissioner for refugees assessed Qunun, found her to be a refugee and referred her to Australia for resettlement.

    The subtlest of subtle hints...

“She is a young Saudi woman whose face has been plastered around the world,” Pearson said. “She’s more at risk than other refugees, not just from her family but threats she has faced online and from her own government.

“We all know what the Saudi government is capable of doing on foreign soil.

I would hope that, once her claim has been assessed, the Australian government will act quickly to get her out of
    Thailand and to safety.”
