Well, if that is indeed the case then it is the final nail in the coffin for many retirees and other O-A applicants.

Certainly, there are not many westerners resident here over the age of 65 who do not have a history of some condition or other even if it is only the early onset of PAD, or angina, high blood pressure, etc., the presence of which may well ensure no policy is obtainable without an annual premium in the region of 200,000+ baht. And I suspect those knocking on the door of 70 years old are in fact uninsurable.

As I have said earlier in the thread, the Kasikornbank is the only company I can find who are offering insurance to foreigners, albeit with the stipulations that they have been resident in Thailand for at least a year and intend to continue their residence and are married to a Thai, up to the age of 70 without a medical examination although they must have no current significant medical issues or chronic conditions. The annual premium is currently in the region of 35,000 baht. One could of course simply use the policy as a means of securing an extension and declare one is fit as a fiddle concealing myriad conditions in the knowledge that one would not actually rely on the coverage - in these circumstances the policy should simply be seen as an immigration fee.

If Kasikorn withdraw this from expats and we are to rely on medical examination based policies with full declaration of pre-existing conditions then the premiums will be prohibitive.

I father think many British/Irish folk here will be considering their options carefully.

It is patently obvious that this initiative has fuck all to do with hospitals losing money to impoverished geriatric sick folk and everything to do with the fact that there are in the region of 200,000 expats resident in Thailand as retirees or spouses and this market is crying out to to be exploited.

I for one am now off if this is to be the law.

I am simply not paying £5,000 a year to live with these ghastly people - it is a deal breaker.

    Fuck 'em.

if what was proposed,LONG TERM RETIREREES,on the 800k.extension,all those that go this rout will certainly change to the 400k.ext.if married,THEN WHAT.it beggars belief if this has been thought out.i would love to see the NO'S of retirered expats that are a burden on thailands health system as what the ministry claim.

Also, I understand it is not compulsory if you already have a suitable foreign insurance policy.

Those will probably be on sale on Thanon Khao San and the usual outlets very soon.

Foreigners with one-year Non-Immigrant Visa “O-A” (Long Stay) will have to compulsorily arrange health insurance, according to new proposals of a key committee.
The "A" means that the possessor has undergone the criminal investigation in his home country and this type of visa can only be issued there.
The possessor will be stamped in for 365 days without the need for border bounce.

The more common non-O without the "A" is either a single entry 90 days visa or a multiple entry visa which has an expiry date a year after it is issued so it can be used for multiple 90 days entries.
This visa is not a long-stay visa and if you use it as a base for a 1 year extension of stay then you are still not here on a long-stay visa.

Wtf do you have the"A" for? Does it give you any discount in Tops or Big C?

The only advantage with a non-OA compared to a non-O is during the first year (no need for border jumps).
The disadvantage with the non-OA was the criminal check nuisance and they might now add another one - the mandatory health insurance.

So when your 1 year extension of stay expires then go to Penang and get a single non-O, you'll have to show some funds for that.
Later on apply for your 1 year extension based on the non-O.

I quite agree but when Penang and Savannakhet experience an exponential rise in those applications when the mandatory heath cover is implemented then I rather think we shall see a change.

When you're filling out an official form the truth is implied to all answers, and once they catch you in a lie you become their biatch.

just saw this, click 404. only problem its in thai.
i think this so called meeting seems to have their type of visa's involved mixed up.they quote NON O-A LONG TERM EXPATS WITH A 1YR.VISA.
so what is the difference, between an expat on a NON O and an expat on a NON O-A.both with 1yr.stays.

I heard this on the radio yesterday too. They specifically said Non-O-A Visas and said that insurance policies would be offered that could be purchased when the Visa was applied for.

Either this measure is only being applied to a small sub-set of foreigners staying here, or the reporters/translators did their usual stellar job of mistranslating/misinterpreting the announcement!

this I cant get my head around,i arrived here on a non o visa, then for the past 9yrs.its extended which allows me to stay 1yr.subject to 90day reports on a retirement 800k.bank fixed rate deposit acc.which has never been touched for 7yrs.are they goner have an insurance rep at immigration or will they leave it up to the imm.officers who know f.all about illness and ins.then what happens to them that either cant afford or wont qualify for a policy.and what about all the other expats on yearly extensions.
has I said before I have enough funds and the wife has plenty in reserve as long as she agree's to cover me,i don't want some jumped up con merchant selling me a product that wouldn't cover a nose bleed.
if you go back to the original proposal,23dec.2018 there are some very influencial people.
    thai life association.
    thai general ins.association.
    the office of ins.commission.
    public health ministry.
the foreign ministry. the interior ministry.
    the immigration bureau.
    the interior ministry.
so for everyone who are subject to these proposals TAKE NOTE.

Your visa, the non-O is not a long-stay visa because it only gives you 90 days of consecutive stay, then you'll need a new visa or if it is a multi-entry visa then you will have to logout of Thailand and then login again for a new 90 days on the same visa, a so called border bounce/border jump.

Your extension is not a visa, it is an extension of your permit to stay.

How long you have stayed in Thailand, how many extension you have done, that is irrelevant, you are not on a long-stay visa.
And that doesn't change, no matter how many ministry's and insurance companies you list in your post.

What is so difficult with that?
