BANGKOK, 27th November 2018 (NNT) - The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is preparing to evict companies and individuals who have encroached on one-third of its 260-rai (102-acre) land near Mae Nam railway station in Bangkok.

The Deputy Traffic Manager of the SRT, Somyut Rueanngam, who oversees a special team to handle the SRT land encroachment case, said about 86 rai (34 acres) of the SRT's land near Mae Nam railway station had been encroached upon. This plot of land accounts for 33 percent of the 260 rai of SRT's land at the station.

The team was formed after the SRT board established a policy to tackle encroachment on SRT's land near the station.

Mr. Somyut said that as development of the site is expected to begin within two years, efforts are already being made to remove people found to have intruded in the area.

He said the SRT has already filed civil lawsuits against 15 individuals and eight juristic persons for the encroachments.

He said the SRT is preparing for the land development scheme near Mae Nam railway station under the Private Investments in State Undertakings Act, which is in line with the board's resolution.

The development scheme at Mae Nam railway station is expected to generate more than 10 billion baht.
