Hospital in hot waters for allegedly refusing to accept acid-attacked woman who later

Self-appointed defender of crime victims Atchariya Rungrattanapong on Monday escorted the family of a Bangkok woman who was attacked with acid and later denied treatment at a private hospital before succumbing to death to lodge a complaint with the Public Health Ministry.

The victim, Ms Chorladda Tarawan, 38, was attacked with acid by her husband, Kamtan Sihanart, 50, who was arrested after escaping to Nakhon Ratchasima province on Sunday.

She was taken to Rama II hospital by her daughter in a taxi but was refused treatment by the medical staff on duty who claimed her condition was not considered an emergency case.

She died while being driven to another hospital in a taxi.

Atchariya said he would like the Public Health Ministry and the Medical Council to probe the conduct of the hospital and its staff.

The self-made crusader went to Rama II Hospital with the victim’s daughter and relatives to seek clarification from the hospital management. The meeting however ended up in a fierce quarrel between Atchariya and a senior doctor there with the former threatening to take the case to the Public Health Ministry and the Medical Council.

Dr. Wallaya Chaiyamanowong, director of Rama II Hospital, today defended the decision of the hospital staff not to accept Ms Chorladda for treatment. She claimed that at the time of her arrival at the hospital the victim’s condition was not life-threatening.

Meanwhile, Tha Kham police in Bangkok reported that the victim’s husband, Mr Kamtan, is being held in custoday after confessing that he threw acid at Ms Dhorladda out of jealousy. He insisted that he didn’t intend to kill her but just wanted to disfigure her.

So in the time it took to hail a taxi and get in, the victim died, yet 5 or 10 minutes prior, her condition was not life-threatening. Dr Wallaya ought to have not defended an indefencible situation. She has her own medical credentials at stake now.

    The almighty dollar, eh.

Ah, well, that's not so bad then. Should get him some sympathy with the judge.

Honestly cannot figure out the worst aspect of the story. The hospital or the husband.

Just makes me a bit sad all round.

Definitely the husband. He wanted to hurt her severely, the hospital just didn't care.

According to the report the hospital need a quick settlement for damage limitation; forget the closure, but one or two staff might be suspended till it's safe to reinstate, and a negotiated 3-4 million would soon be recovered by crewcutting other patients.

In less clear cut cases of negligence there's virtually no chance of success. When I wanted to take on Bkk-Pty my lawyer advised against, because 'Thai doctors do such a wonderful job for the people that Thai law protects them when sometimes they do something wrong.'

And give the husband something to think about!

One wonders what the case of death was.

A local lady suffered the same abuse, chemicals in the face from a jealous boyfriend. After a few days in a government hospital she went home.

Initially she was told she may/would lose her sight. Today she is back at the card tables.

the news report seems to be changing every hr.taxi driver has a different story, there wasn't a doctor on duty, now staff say doctor was having a shit, this morning ch.3.reports a certain amount of fluid was found inside the victim,so the report I saw elsewhere of the husband forcing acid down her throat looks like it could be true.
so lets see if there will be any justice for the family.

Rama II hospital temporarily closed for turning car park into out-patient building

The Rama II hospital which was accused of refusing to accept for treatment a woman attacked with acid last Friday night has been ordered closed temporarily for turning a car park into an out-patient building without permission.

Health Service Support Department director-general Dr Natthawut Prasertsiripong said Wednesday that the hospital had already been fined for the offence of turning a car park into an out-patient building illegally, but he added that this was not a serious offence.

He said that the hospital had been told to properly renovate the building within 15 days otherwise its operating license might be withdrawn which would result in the hospital being closed down.

Regarding the case of the acid-attacked woman who died while being driven to Bang Mod hospital after being allegedly rejected by the Rama II hospital, Dr Nattawut said the case would be presented to a meeting of the department on Monday.

He added that it was the responsibility of the police to probe into the death of the woman.

Yes, the term "attack" could mean anything. Pouring it down her throat would create much more damage.

the hospital had already been fined.for turning the car park into an illegal building, but it WASNT SERIOUS.
told to renovate the building within 15days,DID THEY? if not their operating license might be withdrawn.
so everyone has to wait till Monday, when the case will be presented to a meeting.
as so the evidence and Q&A will all be the truth and nothing but the truth.
oh nearly missed it,its the responsibility of the POLICE to probe as to why she died.

The OP is not correct they were refused treatment because there was no Doctor on duty at A&E. They referred her to Bang Mod hospital down Rama 2 on the other side of the road, about a mile, but allegedly refused to send her in one of their ambulances so they had to get a taxi. They also allegedly failed to call Bang Mod to tell them about the patient. On leaving Rama 2 Hospital they passed the better Nakorthon Hospital about 600 meters down the road, they could have gone there and should have.
They turned the car park into outpatients some time ago, it has no car park at all. I cannot recommend this place having been there.

Param 2 Hospital in the distance, they drove past Nakornthon for at least a mile with the woman dying, closer than it looks here. Nakornthon has 24 hour A&E
