The real motive of those purposefully flying under the radar when working with children in South-East Asia could well be quite worrying. :/

You forgot to mention skill, neither talent nor passion can compensate fully for the lack of proper qualification.

Why should they be trying to learn English.

Wouldn't Chinese or Russian be more beneficial these days?

Funny how these people grinding axes about English teachers so often seem to struggle with the basics.

It's as if dim and distant memories of classroom 'fails' might be a factor.

^ And that's from someone who was once a third rate busker in the classroom himself, before the parent's cheques came through.

Perfect French, Vietnamese, Thai, Cambodian, Lao and many other country's native language, syntax.

I actually think the level English has improved in Thailand, or maybe my Thai has just got better and I don't think about someone's English level when I hang with them?

While we're on syntax, anyone used syntax trees in the classroom?

Some languages place the adjective after the noun. Some "teachers" fail to understand the environment which their students have been absorbed since birth.

I had a teacher use try to use them and the Thai staff was less than pleased that he wasn't covering the holy "content".

As usual, this thread has gone far off-topic. Anyway, what would be the "proper" tefler qualification,...in Stroller's considered opinion?...

    Well stated.

My observation is that most SE Asians manage to achieve reasonably decent

lifestyles, without ever learning to speak a single word of the English language.
Perhaps that's the main reason why "Thailand falls further behind in English language skills" ...

Anyone else worried by the amount of passion and arousal in Manny's classroom.

But with a hint of Hindi interference.

    "I arouse my students"

Let's put that down to a technical knowledge of English rather than native, and not mention it again. Good for him I say, obviously quite passionate about his job.

You’ve got to pick your moments of passion.
If my students were excited about transformer vector groups I’d be concerned for their mental health but if they weren’t passionate about correct high voltage work procedures I’d be wanting to kick some butt.
High risk work can’t be taken lightly.
