EF Education First has released its annual global ranking of English proficiency, placing Thailand in 64th position globally, a drop from last year’s 53rd place, and 16th out of 21 in Asia.

For the fourth time in eight years, Sweden tops the EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI), bumping last year’s top-scorer, the Netherlands, to second place.


EF is an international education company that specialises in language training, educational travel, academic degree programs, and cultural exchange. The rankings draw on data from 1.3 million non-native English speakers in 88 countries and regions.


“Thailand dropped 11 slots in one year in our global ranking of English proficiency,” said Dr Minh N Tran, EF’s senior director of research.

I'm bored at the moment and was thinking of doing the 220 hour TEFL course online. Only gone so far as to begin exploring, no decisions. But I was wondering, is it worth it? Course cost is affordable, minimal really, but are there positions? I'm a little off the beaten track in Nan province. Are they advertised, and where?

Don't waste your money on a worthless qualification. How the hell can you learn how to teach anything online ? You need to have loads of practice standing in front of a class for starters. Get a proper qualification if you are seriously considering teaching English. If the cost of the qualification is "minimal", forget it.

Dunno much about TEFL but I'd be surprised if it teaches you to teach.
The Aussie TAE qualification (Cert IV level) is all about units of competence and qualifications and assessing, and teaches nothing about being an effective teacher.
I'm a really good teacher but I had to teach myself to teach.

It's all about the motivation, learning a second language requires solid motivation and massive amounts of study hours.

Being an effective teacher requires not only training but talent - you need to be born with the talent to teach, without that it is a worthless endeavor both for yourself and for the students.

For all the money that the Gulf countries throw at English programmes, they still are dwelling near the bottom of the table.

But isn't the septic they have on channel 3 all they need?

Change will only come when the real financial reality of how woeful thighland is compared to ASEAN neighbours becomes economically obvious. Even then their Chinese masters will dial up the Lakorn and xenophobia to keep milking the nationalist card until the juice is squeezed.

I once taught in an "International " school which had a principal who spoke two words of English - Good morning. That was his lot. There must be competent Thais who are able to teach English but I have never met one. The blind leading the blind is made worse by an almost universal reluctance to make an effort to learn anything.

Loops I like the idea. I've long thought that the reality TV thing is stale, never appealed to me. Now if the outcome per round was of a capital nature with live outcome i'd be fukin glued nightly, actually i'd like to be glued to Keira also, but she's a shit actress.

To teach well you have to engage learners right from the start.
And a good teacher knows the subject well enough to make complex things seem simple.
A good teacher understands why the learners find some particular thing challenging.
A good teacher is interesting (and maybe exciting) without being a clown- people like a laugh but they don’t respect jokers.

Why should Thais bother? They already know enough english phrases to get by. My brother sick need money for operation. My sister buffalo die can you give money for new? I only work in bar for 2 week, I cashier only. Tree fall on house mother need new roof please send money darling. That man your friend see stay my house all night is cousin darling, I not butterfly, I care you darling. He very poor darling he motorcy broken can you send money for fix darling.

Most of the above spot on, and lazy should be on any list describing Thai attitudes to learning anything beyond glorious Thai history, myth and legend.

However, I have on two occasions been fortunate to come upon Thais that spoke Queen's English, fluent and articulate. Music to the ears; must confess first time I was literally lost for words, and by the time I recovered the speaker had moved on.
