Ombudsman addresses case of public space in Phuket

PHUKET, 9th November 2018, (NNT) - An ombudsman has been looking into a case involving public space on Kamala Beach and Haad Saen Suk community in Phuket, being invaded by vendors and residents who have set up stalls and constructed homes. The investigation follows complaints filed by local people.

Ombudsman Boon Tapanadul has examined the issue and held a meeting with authorities from relevant offices to resolve the matter.

Regarding the invasion of public space to set up stalls and homes, he indicated that some of the vendors in the area possess permits to operate there. He instructed officials to examine a Kamala Beach map to determine the public spaces and commercial vending zones. Ombudsman Boon also discussed solving the issues relating to the administrative system of the related agencies.

According to the Ombudsman, Marine Office 5 Phuket has ordered the removal of more than 120 residences in public spaces of Haad Saen Suk community in Ratsada Sub-district.

Ombudsman Boon said the regulations of the Ministry of Transport indicate that buildings that were constructed before August 23rd 1994 are permitted in the area, along with 17 other types of structures that had been constructed between August 24th 1994 to February 22nd 2017. However, the owners of these buildings and structures must present evidence that proves when they had been constructed. The 17 structures include piers and bridges.

The ombudsman also instructed officials to provide assistance to residents and vendors who have been occupying the restricted public spaces.
