Boy standing up through car sunroof struck by low clearance sign, killed

A boy’s display of carefree exuberance was cut short in the most horrific of ways in Xinyu city, China, on Sunday, Oct 28.

The 13-year-old, surnamed ‘Zhong’, was standing up through the open sunroof of a sedan cruising along a largely deserted expressway when he was struck in the face by a low clearance sign straddling the road, China Spotlight and the Shanghaiist reported.

The 5pm incident was recorded by a nearby motorist, who jokingly speculated with his passenger that the boy would meet certain death were he to be hit by the height restriction barrier.

The video clip, which has gone viral on WeChat, shows the instant the boy’s head collides with the obstacle, which forcefully flings the top part of his body down onto the roof and rear windshield of the sedan.

Death may have been instant, as the boy is immediately knocked out and appears lifeless post-impact, with his arms dangling down towards the car’s boot.

The motorist recording the event shouts in surprise, seemingly stunned that his morbid prediction had come true.

The driver of the car carrying the boy, however, appears to be oblivious to what has happened, as he continues driving for some distance.

The footage then cuts to the motorist passing the sedan, which has pulled into the emergency lane. A man can be seen standing next to the car, speaking on his mobile phone.

Netizens have collectively wondered how both the boy and the car driver could have failed to notice the highly-conspicuous sign.

Looks like authentic blood spattered rear bumper. Could have been faked and spliced in but if so I thought they would have made more of it than a single frame in a driveby.

Also the subtitled banter between the spectating drivers sounds natural.

At 1:02 minutes you will see the blood. It appears to be coming from the car boot. There is NO BLOOD above that. Plus there is no body hanging over the back window. This is FAKE. Another fake news story solved by the TDCSI team. Greens gratefully accepted.

The blood has run down off the rear windscreen and into the channel between the boot lid and body. If you go to 1.16 you will see the lower part of the rear windscreen and part of the boot lid pixelated out, and the only reason for that is that is the blood.
