Trade Competition Act to oversee 7-Eleven’s restaurant expansions

BANGKOK, 5 November 2018 (NNT) - Thailand's Department of Internal Trade (DIT) has said that CP All Plc is permitted to expand the operations of its 7-Eleven convenience stores as 24-hour restaurants, so long as it doesn’t jeopardize smaller vendors.

DIT Director-General Whichai Phochanakij said businesses are permitted to sell goods or services as long as they do not engage in exploitative practices that damage small businesses. He added that corporations must take ethical practices into consideration.

He said authorities can refer to the 2017 Trade Competition Act when evaluating 7-Eleven's activities. Penalties include a fine no more than 10% of annual revenue not exceeding six million baht, on top of a 300,000-baht daily fine until the violation ceases.

    ...Blah blah blah...
CP can do what it wants, just as Thailand Tobacco Monopoly can do as it wants (Hint: it says it all in the name).

Righto then. CP CEO didn't get to be Thailand's richest guy (other than he who cannot be named) by giving a flying-fuck-at-a-rolling-donut about 'smaller vendors'.

Those penalties are draconian considering jeopardy of smaller vendors is subjective. Sounds like they're saying go ahead and we'll squeeze you when we see fit.

So what can we expect from these 24/7 restaurants, a budget Chateaubriand and an extensive wine list?

7-11 already serves food all the time. What does this mean? They're gonna set up tables out front next to the other grillers and soup carts?
