SONGKHLA, 29th October 2018 (NNT) - The Deputy Director-General of the Livestock Development Department, Jeerasak Pipattanapongsophon, chaired a meeting to discuss measures to prevent African swine fever from spreading into Thailand.

At the meeting held on Monday in the southern province of Songkhla, Mr. Jeerasak said the disease would cause massive damage to the domestic pig farming industry, if it enters the country.

The official said he would ask relevant agencies, including the Royal Thai Army, to help prevent more boars from being smuggled across the border.

The Chief of the Songkhla Livestock Development Office, Kittikorn Jenpaiboon, insisted that the authorities have been very strict at the border checkpoints and have regularly conducted patrols along the border areas.
