Two soldiers missing after rapid waters in Nan cause their boat to overturn

NAN, 5th September 2018 (NNT) – A boat carrying soldiers training for a rowing competition in the Nan River was overturned in its rapid waters during a recent session, resulting in a lengthy search for the mising men. Meanwhile, other areas of Nan province have experienced forest runoff and mudslides.

Nan has been hit by over 100 millimeters of rain since the start of the rainy season and both its Tung Chang and Song Kwae districts have been affected by mudslides and runoff. Erosion in the province completely destroyed one farmer’s chicken coop while also severing power lines and damaging fish farms and roadways. District chiefs have recommended 39 households move out their homes until the situation improves.

At the Baan Hua Wiang Nua-Baan Nam Tuan area of Phu Piang district, soldiers from the 38th Infantry Regiment, Suriyapong Camp, training for a rowing competition had their boat overturned by the fast flowing water of the Nan River. The river had been swollen by recent rain and a whirlpool had formed near a bridge in the training area. All eight soldiers taking part in the training session were pulled under the water and it took seven speedboats searching over three kilometers for two hours to retrieve six of the men. Those rescued have been sent to hospital and an extensive search operation has been launched for the remaining two.
