BANGKOK, 11th August 2018 (NNT) – The Thailand Research Fund arranged an academic seminar on Friday to discuss the issue of landslides and subsidence in Thailand.

Sutthisak Sornlum, a geologist at the Geotechnical Engineering Research and Development Center of Kasetsart University, said later that 95% of land subsidence incidents in Thailand, are caused by human activities whereas Nature can be held accountable for the remaining 5% of cases. He added that although surface subsidence is rare in Thailand, its impact is too great to ignore.

Man-induced subsidence and landslides can be devastating natural occurrences, said Sutthisak, pointing out that the risk areas are those at the foot of a mountain or near artificially constructed water channels.

He warned that those who reside or make a living in such areas must be cautious and should always heed government’s advice.

Subsidence is most often caused by the removal of water, oil, natural gas, or mineral resources out of the ground by pumping, fracking, or mining activities.
