BANGKOK, 23 June 2018 – More than 4,000 people have been arrested on charges of gambling on World Cup soccer games in 10 days after the world tournament in Russia kicked off.
Deputy Police Spokesman Pol Col Kritsana Pattanacharoen revealed the number of alleged gamblers on World Cup soccer matches during 14-22 June 2018 has reached 4,067. Of that total, 3,719 were alleged as gamblers, 79 as messengers, 188 as touts, 31 as online hosts, and 50 as online gamblers, with some 4.2 million baht in cash and a total of 11 million baht in combined betting value.
The deputy spokesman said the police have conducted regular patrols at venues suspected to host the World Cup gambling, such as bars, clubs, and internet cafes, as well as being on high alert for money-related crimes and thefts, especially at banks, gold shops, convenience stores, and ATM units.
The Technology Crime Suppression Division and the Technological Support Division were instructed to monitor any online violations, and to prosecute those involved with betting on soccer games as well as those who might possibly involved behind the scenes. The Anti-Money Laundering Office was instructed to investigate into assets involved as well as confiscate them according to the anti-money laundering law.
