BANGKOK, 14th June 2018 (NNT) - The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) will begin offering free subway travel for state welfare cardholders next month, while distributing Spider cards later this month.

MRTA Governor Pakapong Sirikantaramas said today the subway operator will allow welfare cardholders nationwide to register for the right to use its Blue and Purple Lines free of charge. The registration period is from July 6th to September 30th, and the cards take effect from July 20th.

The Blue Line runs from Bang Sue station to Hua Lamphong station, while the Purple Line runs from Bang Yai station to Tao Poon station.

The MRTA will also distribute 200,000 Spider cards from its railway stations along the Blue and Purple Lines starting June 22nd, beginning the pilot phase of its implementation. Initially, the Spider cards will only work at Blue and Purple Line stations. By October, the card is expected to work on the Airport Rail Link as well as on buses operated by the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority.
