Elderly Brit says he fell asleep before causing death of girl in Rayong car crash

RAYONG — An elderly Briton said Friday he fell asleep behind the wheel when he caused the death of a 10-year-old girl in a car crash.

Alan Jamieson; 79 of Liverpool, England; confessed to police that he hit the car carrying Pattharawadi Sooknet and her family on Thursday night in Rayong province. Jamieson was driving without a license and tested positive for intoxication.

“He confessed to hitting her, but he said he was asleep at the wheel,” Capt. Suchet Tepchali of Rayong city police said.

Suchet said Jamieson was an expat who had been living in Thailand 20 years.

The reaction on here will be somewhat more muted than if it were a pissed up Thai pushing 80 who'd killed a ten year old Brit though.

In fact there will probably be accusations of reckless garland selling in a built up area.

    They do in this case.

Thailand isn't #2 (and realistically, probably #1) in the world for traffic fatalities for nothing.

^No, mate. That face is not familiar. Most expats who have been in the Rayong area for a long time might have been in the Petrochem game previously, but not a face I recognise.

The Brit appears to have lived long enough in Thailand to dispense with the driving licence, but not long enough to leg it after an accident...

It would be quite easy to do in Thailand, i'd imagine , especially in rural areas where theres no extensive ANPR system, you never see police cars pulling anyone over,, its mostly bikes that are stopped at the police road blocks(daytime) and you can just slip a few hundred or thousand baht to the bib and be on your way if you are unlucky enough to be stopped.

Thais often do. If asleep, they couldn't be in control, therefore they're not responsible.
He forgot to say that he was drunk because he'd been having family problems and was under stress.

But in seriousness, I doubt he thinks it's a defence, just stating the fact.

He's old enough and has the advantage of having had proper driver training, so I have no sympathy for him when he ends up in prison.

    RIP innocent little girl.

I am curious to know what the other car was doing. Sure, the old Brit shouldn't have been driving, but did the other car contribute to the catstrophe by doing something typically Thai?

    Who gives a shite?
If she had no seatbelt on, sat in the back of a pick up whilst her dad was doing 120 kmh the wrong way up the hard shoulder, he'd still be to blame... for being drunk and asleep ffs

    Not so... FFS.
He's certainly responsible for his lack of judgement in getting behind the wheel while drunk, and he should never have been there at that time for the accident to have happened.
But had the girl's dad been doing what you say, he does indeed bear some of the responsiblity.
Lets say Dad, while doing what you say in the example, hit the drunk instead of the other way around. Who's to blame? If the drunk Brit hit Dad while Dad was speeding on the wrong side around a blind corner...Dad certainly bears some responsiblity.
