Peppa Pig blocked on Chinese video app after becoming a 'subculture icon'



A popular Chinese video-sharing app has blocked content related to the British animated children's program Peppa Pig,
after the cartoon's main character became a "subculture icon" on social media.

Key points:

• It is not known if the decision to block the posts was a directive from authorities

Cyber policy analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Centre, Fergus Ryan, said while the Peppa Pig ban appears
"pretty weird at first glance" it makes sense in the context of China's ever-expanding censorship regime.

"There's a top-down call from the authorities in China for there to be more positive energy in online content," he said.

"This is something that [Chinese President] Xi Jinping himself talks about, and it's sort of a way of exhorting the young
people in China to in a positive way support the development of the country."




The Global Times reported Peppa Pig has come to be associated with the "shehuiren" subculture, which usually refers to people
associated with organised crime, but can also refer to people who "run counter to the mainstream".

Drone light show in China breaks world record

1,374 illuminated dancing drones have achieved the Guinness World Record for the most unmanned aerial vehicles in simultaneous flight.
The stunning display in Xi'an, China, saw the drones take part in a 13-minute flight, spread over a kilometre.

The 13-minute-long display, coordinated by a single person with a computer, included such figures as a Buddha, a caterpillar on a piece
of wood and a high-speed train.

The show also paid tribute to the ‘One Belt One Road’ initiative by Chinese leader Xi Jinping, which is aimed at boosting cooperation and
connectivity among Eurasian countries.

Chinese man pays $29,300 for two steamed buns by accidentally entering his PIN as amount due



A man in central China accidentally paid more than 140,000 yuan ($29,300) for two steamed buns after he entered his PIN rather
than the amount due on e-payment platform Alipay.

Liuzhu He, the manager of the steamed bun shop in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, told local media that he didn't realise he received
the wrong amount until he did his bookkeeping in late April — a month after the incident.

He said he approached the media for help when the owner didn't come back to collect the money.
Two people named Hongwei Han — the name of the customer — contacted local media and the case was referred to the police.

Economic Watch: China expands imports to share development dividends with world


"BEIJING, June 18 (Xinhua) -- China has reassured the world that its stance on encouraging imports will not change, a major development strategy that will not only help domestic industrial upgrades but also stimulate global economic growth.

A slew of incentives will be taken to further boost imports, the State Council, China's cabinet, decided at an executive meeting last week chaired by Premier Li Keqiang.
In response to domestic consumption upgrades and an economic shift to quality, China supports the imports of daily consumer goods, medicine, and equipment for rehabilitation and old-age care, according to the meeting. More measures are in the pipelines to lower tariffs, optimize import customs clearance, and clear up unreasonable management measures and fees.

The move represents China's latest efforts to further open up its economy, as the country embraces the 40th anniversary of the reform and open-up drive, the first and foremost factor behind its economic success story.

The government has announced multiple new policies to further liberalize domestic sectors and bring in more foreign products since the beginning of the year.
Effective on July 1, the average tariff rate for clothing, shoes and hats, kitchenware, and sports and fitness supplies will be reduced from 15.9 percent to 7.1 percent, and that for home appliances such as washing machines and refrigerators from 20.5 percent to 8 percent. The tariff rates for other products including aquatic products, processed food, detergents, cosmetics, and some medicine will also be reduced substantially.

Import taxes on vehicles and auto parts will also see marked reduction on the same day to upgrade the auto industry.
"Our initiative to boost imports demonstrates China's commitment to a new round of high-standard opening up, to economic restructuring, and to economic transformation and high-quality development," Li said.
China has been striving to reduce tariffs. More than 8,000 types of imported goods now enjoy duty-free policies, based on free trade agreements with 23 countries and regions.

Analysts believe the intensive pro-imports measures will help China meet increasing domestic demand, achieve balanced trade, and share development dividends with rest of the world.

Widened access for foreign goods will allow Chinese consumers to enjoy more quality products and prompt domestic companies to improve their competitiveness, said Zhang Jianping, researcher at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation under the Ministry of Commerce.

Given steady economic expansion, China has been vigorous in foreign trade over the past years, overtaking the United States as the world's largest goods trading nation in 2017.

In breakdown, the country has been the world's largest exporter and second largest importer of goods for nine consecutive years, and is now the world's largest importer of energy resources. China contributed 10.2 percent to global imports last year.

From automobiles and crude oil to soy beans and medicine, Chinese buyers are driving growth in a range of different sectors around the world. China boasts the world's largest middle-income group who have a bigger appetite and higher requirements for products from daily necessities to electronic equipment, creating huge opportunities for foreign businesses.

"Expanding imports is an important way to achieve mutual benefit," said Li Dawei, researcher with the Chinese Academy of Macroeconomic Research.
Analysts said these measures signal that China wishes to not only improve itself, but to inclusively share the benefits derived from its development model.

Thanks to the favorable policies and enormous demand, the imports boom will likely continue.
Chinese authorities expect the country to import goods worth 24 trillion U.S. dollars in the next 15 years, along with attracting 2 trillion dollars of foreign investment.
China's goods imports jumped 15.6 percent year on year to 1.19 trillion yuan (around 185 billion U.S. dollars) in May, leading to a 43.1-percent decline in trade surplus. Exports only grew 3.2 percent. "

"China's relations with Cambodia have been in the media spotlight, following reports that Beijing will provide more than $100 million in military assistance, after a visit by Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe to the Southeast Asian country.

China and Cambodia have broad potential for cooperation in such areas as infrastructure, finance, energy and tourism. China's cooperation with Cambodia is comprehensive, multi-dimensional and diversified, so it is normal to see China's aid to the Southeast Asian country include some portion of military assistance. Since the 1950s, China has provided aid in the form of both goods and technology to Cambodia. Today, Beijing is one of Cambodia's largest economic aid sources and its biggest source of foreign direct investment.

China's military assistance has aroused vigilance in the West, where some observers see it as evidence that China is trying to flex its muscles. But this view is unjust and misses the big picture of China's engagement in Cambodia. The huge amount of economic aid and foreign investment from China nicely meets the needs of Cambodia.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald (SMH), China accounted for about 30 percent of Cambodia's total investment in 2017. As China increases presence in the Southeast Asian country, there has inevitably been controversy over China-Cambodia relations. The SMH report said Chinese investment has brought rapid social and financial changes, but not everybody is happy about the influx of money and people. The report cited one person as saying that Chinese people "are taking over all our space."

It isn't hard to find a few people who are opposed to foreign investment, but this is not the mainstream view in Cambodia. For instance, the Southeast Asian country has been working to promote a "China-ready" strategy that aims to attract 2 million Chinese tourists annually by 2020. The influx of money and people from China is welcomed by Cambodia, as this process is likely to inject new momentum into economic growth and help Cambodia as it faces a complex external environment.

A Cambodian official recently told reporters that "the government gave the Europeans and Americans 15 years to develop (our country) and all they brought was backpackers and marijuana."

However, the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone, built by Chinese and Cambodian enterprises, already employs nearly 20,000 local people. Cambodia's cooperation with China is in the interests of the Cambodian people, and we believe that bilateral economic cooperation can develop free from any outside interference."

China, Papua New Guinea pledge pragmatic cooperation

Both Premier Li Keqiang and visiting Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Peter O'Neill have expressed the willingness to cooperate more between the two countries in the future.

While holding talks with Prime Minister O'Neill in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing Thursday, Premier Li said the relations between the two countries have maintained stable development in recent years, and become an example for relations between China and the island countries in the Pacific Ocean.

"China appreciates Papua New Guinea's firm adherence to the one-China policy and will, as always, support Papua New Guinea's independent choice of development path suited to its national conditions," said Li, stressing that China is willing to link the Belt and Road Initiative with Papua New Guinea's development strategies to make use of their complementary advantages and create more opportunities for cooperation in economy and trade, investment, energy, resources, infrastructure, and industrial capacity.

China supports Papua New Guinea's hosting of the APEC meeting this year and is willing to cooperate and coordinate more in the multilateral mechanism such as the United Nations, APEC, and the Pacific Islands Forum and in dealing with the climate change issue to safeguard the common interests of developing countries, Li said.

O'Neill said relations between Papua New Guinea and China have continued a strong momentum of development since the two countries established diplomatic ties, and the governments of the two countries, the two peoples have maintained friendly ties.

Papua New Guinea is willing to work with China to expand bilateral trade and investment, have more cooperation in the projects in natural gas, industrial parks, community colleges, and cooperate more in fields such as tourism and have more people-to-people exchanges, said O'Neill, who also thanked China for its good support for his country's hosting of the APEC meeting 2018.

French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe began his four-day visit to China in Shenzhen, South China's Guangdong Province on Friday, with experts saying that the frequent official exchanges between China and France show that the two countries are making efforts to overcome common challenges.

French President Emmanuel Macron visited China in January. Experts said the frequent communication and exchanges between Chinese and French political leaders show that both countries not only express their common stance on globalization and countering protectionism but also work together to seek solutions and countermeasures.

"The international situation is changing, and China and France share the pressure from rising protectionism and counter-globalization." So, the two countries are frequently reciprocating visits among its senior officials and leaders, said Cui Hongjian, director of the China Institute of International Studies' Department of European Studies.

Before Philippe left France for China, he met Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor on Thursday in Paris, according to news.gov.hk, the official website of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Lam told Philippe she looks forward to working with different sectors in France to seize opportunities under the China-proposed Belt and Road initiative.

On May 16, China's State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited France and met at the Élysée Palace in Paris with Foreign Policy Adviser to the President of France Philippe Etienne and French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian.

"The EU is also facing internal challenges, such as disputes between member states over issues like immigration. As a key member of the EU, the French prime minister's trip might also be meant to show stability and unity within the EU to China," Cui said.

In an interview with Chinese financial news website yicai.com, Philippe said he will bring a concrete list of projects on cooperation in the Belt and Road initiative to Beijing.

"These projects underwent consultations with relevant French institutes and departments, and we are capable of implementing these projects," he said.

On trade and globalization, France found the US under the Trump administration is unreliable, so it has to boost cooperation with China, and French companies can find opportunities in the Belt and Road initiative, said Wang Yiwei, director of the Institute of International Affairs at Renmin University.

Philippe will also visit Beijing and Shanghai, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry. He will hold dialogues on the economic, political and international aspects of the partnership, the French Prime Minister's office said on Thursday, the Xinhua News Agency reported."

Chinese enterprise makes clean water available in Ghana



"A Chinese enterprise has made clean water available to Ghanaians by digging 1,000 wells across the country, Xinhuanet.com reported on June 20. Due to poor geographical conditions and lagging economic development, many villagers in Ghana had to collect rainwater and river water for daily use, and thus were vulnerable to diseases such as cholera. When times were tough, they even had to fetch dreggy water from distant ponds.

However, thanks to the wells dug by the Jiangxi Zhongmei Engineering Construction Company, locals are now able to access clean drinking water.

In November 2015, the Chinese government made the decision to help dig 1,000 wells in 832 villages across six provinces in Ghana, to help solve the water problem. The project is expected to benefit 500,000 Ghanaians.

Chinese expert, Huang Xianzhou, explained that although some experts were infected with malaria and had to endure the weather and poor sanitary conditions during construction, they felt it was all worthwhile when they saw how much one well could change the lives of those living in a village.

Zhang Jie, an employee of the project, said that he was touched when a local immediately sent him to hospital when he quickly developed a fever.

These wells are changing lives in Ghana, and in turn, the kindness shown by locals has warmed the hearts of Chinese experts, further deepening friendship and cooperation between China and Ghana. "
