Police urge pool safety after toddler drowns at Phuket villa

The Phuket News Friday 27 April 2018, 12:45PM
PHUKET: Police are urging parents of infants and young children to keep their young ones in sight at all times after a horrific incident on Monday (April 23) resulted in a 9-month-old boy drowning at an expat family’s home in Cherng Talay.

Police were notified of the incident at 10am on Monday by the parents, who Capt Nareupon Taewlae of the Cherng Talay Police said were an expat couple living on the island. The mother is Filipino, he noted.

“The parents told officers that they forgot to close the door to the pool terrace,” Capt Nareupon Taewlae told The Phuket News.

“They didn’t know what had happened until about 7:30am, when they discovered that their 10-year-old son had already pulled the toddler from the pool all by himself,” he explained.

The parents rushed their baby to hospital, but sadly the infant was pronounced dead.

“I did not press the parents too much while questioning because this is a very hard time for them. It is a traumatic loss, and they are devastated,” Capt Nareupon said.

“This is a terrible incident and we do not want any more incidents like this to happen to anyone,” Capt Nareupon added.

“All parents must be careful to look over their children,” he pleaded.

“Also, not taking good care of your children is punishable by law. If the circumstances warrant it, parents can be charged for negligence causing the death of their own children.

“Taking care of your own children with care and love is every parent’s responsibility,” Capt Nareupon added.

Perhaps he'd be so kind as to explain that to the parents of the poor little mites that get dragged around at all hours to sell flowers and chewing gum to farangs.

I think at that age my mom/mum kept me in a playpen, when she could not sit and watch me. To stop me putting my fingers in electrical outlets and that sort of thing. The mother should be charged with negligence causing death.
It is a sad story but like many things in life, sometimes you only get one chance to do do something the right way. I suspect she left the 10-year old to look after his sibling which of course he did not.

You need eyes in the back of your head with toddlers.

What's a toddler doing outside around the pool at that hour?
At nine months old they're barely walking, poor parenting.

^Yep, facking nightmare until they learn to swim. Especially in warm countries where there are swimming pools everywhere.
There was a 3 yo drowned in a public swimming baths in the UK local to us last week. Parents took their eyes off the kid just long enough.. Very sad.

Plenty of klongs, irrigation channels, ponds etc. which the kids visit. Every time we go with a "party" to the beach it amazes me how few kids can even float let alone swim.

The parents eat and drink. An odd one or two actually play with their kids. A very different experience to when I was a nipper.

Parenting is a joint responsibility, always had been. The husband is equally responsible.

The 10 year old will have nightmares for life.

It's the new society. Look at your phone and the kids will either watch TV or run amouk by themselves.

That old chestnut is a crock of shit said by retards with no spacial awareness.

Reminds me a bit of the idiot who left a stool on his high floored balcony in one of Thailands seaside towns a few years back.

Ten year old kids shouldnt be babysitting, especially around a pool.

I shudder to think how he and his parents will feel for the rest of their lives.
Thats gonna haunt them for sure

Irresponsible and negligent parenting seems to be widespread in the Kingdom.
Kids left to run feral by pre occupied parents and general selfish idiocy.
No way should the toddler have been left alone because a ten year old no matter how mature will not have the ability and experience needed for baby care.
What were the parents doing at 7.30 in the morning?
The old chestnut still stands depending on ones opinion of childcare.
Bringing up three children and wanting them to be healthy , intelligent , safe , happy and educated does require an extra pair of eyes, preferably in the back of one's head.

And, if I might add, elsewhere in the world.
