Getting stuff for free is the only thing that makes tax smile.

A bunch of roses might have had that effect.

Shark bites confirmed for Norwegian in Hua Hin

    Bangkok Post

PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN: A Norwegian tourist was bitten by a shark, officials confirmed for the first time on Wednesday, as they planned more safety measures for swimmers.

Sophon Thongdee, the deputy chief of the Marine and Coastal Resources Department, and provincial governor Pallop Singhaseni said on Wednesday Werner Danielsen had been bitten by a bull shark while swimming at Sai Noi beach in Hua Hin district on Sunday.

Judging from the wound on his left leg, marine experts said the shark was about one year old and about one metre long, the governor said. Mr Werner, 54, is still at Bangkok Hua Hin Hospital but his condition is stable, the governor added. He suffered tendon damage and received 19 stitches.

The beach has been sealed off for at least 20 days due to safety concerns for tourists, by which time the department plans to install long, floating nets to demarcate swimming zones. The governor said a drone would be used to fly patrols over the area to alert officials about any dangers for swimmers.

The sea near Wat Tham Khao Tao where the Norwegian was attacked is a declared no-fishing zone, and is rich in fish and other marine life.

The old curmudgeon also thinks sea snakes are a danger to him...like they attack people, yeah right. And that clear water as deep as his height is protection against sharks, lol.

Having another look at the vid, I'm now convinced those two fish are not sharks. Unless the cliff the monk was on was 20 or 30 metres high, and when you look at the waves breaking on the rocks, if the cliff was that high then it was a very rough day that day. The clincher is in the sound...waves gently lapping the rocks. No white water from monster waves, no sediment stirred up, fast frequency...no, it's a calm day. and those are ripples lapping the rocks. That video is taken no more than a metre or 2 above the water, and correspondingly those fish are about 30 or 40 cm long, tops.
You can clearly see the bottom, and the water appears to be less than a metre deep, I'd say half a meter.

One must assume you have posted your daft ruminations in total ignorance of the Bangkok Post article.

I shall refrain from any further comment on your intellectual acuity but in reference to your blatherings I should think any thought of embarking on a career as an ichthyologist is somewhat ill-founded.

No, one mustn't assume that. It would be daft and totally ignorant to assume the video of 2 fish from a monk is proof positive that there were sharks in the area and that one of those sharks bit a tourist.
In fact it would be daft and ignorant rumination to even conceive of the notion.

It might serve you well unless it was appreciative comment.

Really? How say you? My immediate thought, at first glance, was those 2 fish didn't look like sharks, and I posted said reaction. Upon further consideration (prompted by your first derisive comments) I think I have shown, by pointing out the sound track of quietly lapping ripples (let alone the visual evidence), that the fish in question can not be much more than a foot long.
Of course, sharks start out at that sort of length...

I like this story because it illustrates how things work when an issue arise:
1 - a swift denial, as the issue could affect revenue
2 - blame something else, less damaging for the revenue or better, blame the victim (the dumb guy fell on rocks and mistook them with shark jaws)
3 - when the heat goes down aknowledge the issue but with a massive prevention plan (patrolling the sea and rounding up the culprits for attitude adjustment, forbidding swimmers to go farther than 20 meters from the shore...)
4 - 2 days later stop the fuss, as it's not fun and it's costly to patrol the sea in addition to be ineffective.

No swimming at Hua Hin beaches following bull shark discovery

PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN, 19th April 2018 (NNT) – Authorities in Prachuap Khiri Khan province have asked tourists to refrain from getting into the water off the beaches in Hua Hin district at this time, following the recent discovery of bull sharks in the area.

Many Thai and foreign visitors have come to Tham Khao Tao Temple in Hua Hin to witness the bull sharks, which are commonly seen when seawater temperature decreases.

Signs in Thai, English, and Chinese languages have been placed along the Sai Noi Beach, warning visitors from entering the water during the installation of shark prevention nets which will take about 20 to 30 days to complete.

Officials are also on-site with necessary equipment and boats to provide immediate assistance to visitors in case of emergency.

Prachuap Khiri Khan placing safety net in water to keep sharks away from swimmers

PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN, 19th April 2018 (NNT) - The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) and local authorities in Prachuap Khiri Khan will place a 350-meter long net in the ocean to keep beachgoers at Hat Sai Noi Beach safe, in the wake of a shark attack on Sunday.

A 54-year-old Norwegian tourist was bitten by a bull shark while swimming in the tourist district of Hua Hin. To prevent shark attacks in the future, DMCR officials and local authorities will place a net in the water to keep sharks away from swimmers.

The sea is now off limits until the installation of a 350-meter long net is finished. The installation will take about 20 days. DMCR officers are patrolling the area where the bull shark was found.

Warning signs in Thai, English, and Chinese will be set up along the beach. Hotel and restaurant operators have been asked to inform their customers of the new safety regulations.

In the field of psychology, the DunningKruger effect is a cognitive bias wherein people of low ability have illusory superiority, mistakenly assessing their cognitive ability as greater than it is.

We were the day after the attack because it's a quieter, nicer beach than others. Marine police were there all day but they only stopped people swimming in the afternoon. We retreated to the pool in the beach club..

I've swum with reef sharks about 100 metres off the beaches of Phi Phi and it goes without saying that there are gonna be sharks in tropical waters.

The big surprise is that it doesn't happen more often with the amount of people in the water.

It's idiocy to be certain that the video was not a video of 2 bull sharks?
You who thinks he's safe from sea snake attack ( ) and shark attack in clear water a meter or two deep.

I stick to my opinion; the video is not of sharks, unless it's from a fairly high cliff, which I doubt by the sound of the waves.

I suggest you look up the definition of "idiocy" and of what Dunning Kruger is.

I also offer up some information, recently looked up; Bull sharks are territorial, so if a pair live in the area, more attacks would have occurred over the years. Almost no attacks have occurred for decades in the whole of the Gulf.
That's not to say I think there is no such thing as a bull shark in Hua Hin. I've only commented on the video.

Four bull sharks sighted in Hua Hin sea

    April 20, 2018 | | By Thai PBS

Four bull sharks were sighted in the sea near Khao Tao in Hua Hin district of Prachuap Khiri Khan by authorities conducting searches on patrol boats and by drones.

Thipamas Upnoi, director of the Marine and Coastal Resources and Development Centre at the Central Gulf of Thailand said the observation operation which began late yesterday (April 19) until Friday morning found four sharks, believed to be bull sharks in the area off Khao Tao in Hua Hin.

She said the sharks are about 1-2 metres long. They were sighted swimming on the sea surface.
The operation followed the April 15 shark attack of a Norwegian tourist swimming near Hat Sai Noi. He sustained injuries to his leg and is now in safe condition.

Bannarak Sermthong, director of Marine and Coastal Resources Management Office 4, said Khao Tao is a big rock hill in the sea coast with no beach. Such location is good for sharks to live during the day when the sea temperature is high, he said.

He said the sighting of sharks in the area is the indicator of good marine environment in the area. Mr Bannarak said authorities from several government agencies who included tourist police, civil disaster relief volunteers, district officials, jet skiers, and soldiers were deployed at Sai Noi beach for emergency response.

At least 10 signs banning tourists from swimming in the area have been erected on the beach but some tourists still didn’t listen to warning and still went swimming in the sea, he noted.

He also said shark prevention net of 300 metres wide and bouys have been erected 100 metres off Sai Noi beach at the depth of 20 metres to ensure safety for tourists swimming in the sea.

Governor denies shark bit South Korean in Hua Hin

    Bangkok Post
    1 May 2018
    WRITER: CHAIWAT SATYAEM

PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN: Provincial authorities have denied reports that a South Korean tourist was bitten by a shark off the same beach where a Norwegian tourist was attacked on April 15.

Prachuap Khiri Khan governor Pallop Singhasenee said on Tuesday that a fact-finding inquiry was promptly launched after reports spread that another tourist had been attacked by a shark while swimming at Sai Noi beach in Hua Hin district.

The inquiry found the South Korean woman had not been bitten by a shark, said the governor. The tourist in fact sustained an ankle injury from a sharp object while swimming at Bo Kaew beach in front of a hotel - for which she received one stitch, said Mr Pallop. He insisted there had only been a single shark attack this year.

On April 15, Werner Danielsen, a 54-year-old Norwegian national, was bitten by a bull shark while swimming off Sai Noi beach in Hua Hin district. He suffered tendon damage and received 19 stitches.

The governor made his remarks as he led officials from the Hua Hin district office, the Hua Hin municipality, the Region 4 Marine and Coastal Resources Office and a local hospital to Sai Noi beach to get first-hand information about the alleged second shark attack as reported on social media.

Reports like that erode faith among tourists, he said, damaging the popularity of Prachuap Khiri Khan. The governor said concerned agencies would meet today to discuss measures to help the Norwegian tourist after an insurance firm in his country refused to cover his medical bills at Bangkok Hua Hin Hospital. He had now been moved to Srinagarind Hospital in Khon Khon, the home province of his Thai wife.

Sasithorn Kettia, a public health official at Khao Tao health promotion hospital, said hotel staffers had sent a South Korean woman, 60, for treatment at the hospital on April 19. The woman suffered a wound to her right ankle, said Ms Sasithorn, adding the wound was likely to be caused by a sharp object.

When questioned about how she sustained the injury, the tourist said she was swimming in shallow waters when she felt pain in her foot. The South Korean woman’s wound was not a shark bite, confirmed the public health official.

Phriewpan Khotchaphayuk, manager of Saneh Beach Club hotel at Sai Noi beach, said the hotel has helped authorities warn tourists to take exercise caution while swimming off the beach following the shark attack on the Norwegian tourist. Since then, there have been no additional close encounters with sharks. He was surprised to hear about the report on social media, he said.
