BANGKOK, 16th April 2018 (NNT)-The Fisheries Department has urged fishing vessel operators, who have already been given permission to catch fish and crustaceans, to have a code painted on the side of the boat before the end of May.

Fisheries Department Director-General Dr. Adisorn Promthep, said today that the requirement for fishing vessels to display the code came into effect on April 1st when it was published in the Royal Gazette.

The move is to solve issues related to illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU). The code, which must be visible on the side of the vessel, consists of four sets of letters and numbers.

For example, the letter ‘T’ of the code ‘T-M-245-B’ indicates that the boat lawfully operates in the Gulf of Thailand while the second letter ‘M’ means that the vessel weighs at least 30 but less than 60 gross tons.

The number ‘245’ is the registration number and the letter ‘B’ is used to indicate that the particular boat is equipped with a seine net. All legal fishing vessels must now have such a code painted on the side no later than May.

10-15 gt vessels urged to obtain licenses for artisanal fishing

BANGKOK, 20th April 2018 (NNT) - The Department of Fisheries has commenced the registration procedure for vessels below 15 gross tonnage to obtain licenses for artisanal fishing.

Referring to Section 174 of the 2018 Fisheries Act, Director General of the Department of Fisheries Adisorn Promthep said today that operators of fishing vessels that are over 10 gross tonnage but not more than 15 gross tonnes can now apply for licenses at Bangkok Provincial Fisheries Office, district offices or local fisheries offices in seaside districts.

Vessels that have obtained the fishing licenses must correctly and clearly display their license codes. For example, the license codes of fishing boats operating in the Andaman Sea must carry the capital letter A. Those operating in the Gulf of Thailand must carry the capital letter T. Both types of license code must be followed by the capital letter R and the code numbers to show that they have been registered under Section 174 of the new Fisheries Act.

Boat owners are required to bring copies of the boat's old fishing license and three photographs of the boat's front that show its registration number and name, as well as the boat's entire left and right sides. The move is aimed at advancing the crusade against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU).
