Chiang Rai Takes Top Spot Again on Day 2 of “Songkrans 7 Dangerous Days”

CHIANG RAI – On the second day of Songkrans “7 DANGEROUS DAYS” a total of 99 people have been killed in traffic accidents, and 1,085 others injured, with about 1,500 motorbikes and cars impounded from drunk drivers.


Chiang Rai province reported the highest number of accidents (38) and injured people (41). Provinces with the highest death toll were Buri Ram, Nakhon Ratchasima and Phetchabun, with five each.


Chiang Rai, Governor Narongsak Osotthanakorn visited road checkpoints set up in many areas to minimize road accidents. The checkpoints have services to provide commuters with food and desserts that would help prevent people from falling asleep behind the wheel.

The number of drink drivers arrested by officials in the past three days since April 11 has jumped to 113,960 from almost 60,000 on the second day, said Colonel Sirichan Ngathong, deputy spokesperson of the National Council for Peace and Order, on Saturday.


In the meantime, she said that officials had seized altogether 2,991 cars and motorcycles.


The seized vehicles are kept at respective police stations and they can be reclaimed by their owners after the end of Songkran festival in order to prevent them from using the vehicles which may involve in road accidents from drink driving.


Meanwhile on Silom road where thousands of Thais and foreign tourists are expected to gather to participate in the water splashing fun today, more than 700 policemen in plainclothes and uniform have been dispatched to ensure peace and order.


Pol Maj-Gen Panurat Lakboon, deputy commissioner of Metropolitan Police Bureau, made an inspection trip of Silom road in the morning. He said that no cases of physical assault were reported yesterday, but there were ten complaints of missing valuables.


Before entering the road to join the fun-filled event, revelers are subjected to searches to prevent any of them from carrying weapons such as knives or cutters.

The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) and related authorities seized a total of 7,067 vehicles from drunk drivers in the first four days (April 11-14) of monitoring road accidents over the Songkran holidays.

NCPO and Army deputy spokeswoman Colonel Sirichan Ngathong said on Sunday that apart from seizing 5,019 cars/trucks and 2,048 motorcycles from April 11 to 14 in an effort to enforce drunk-driving laws, the authorities also seized driver's licences from 16,588 motorists and motorcyclists.


The seized vehicles would be returned to the owners after the seven-day accident monitoring period, she added.


Colonel Sirichan reminded people that very hot weather was forecast for April 15-18, with maximum temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius and summer storms expected in upper Thailand plus Bangkok and surrounding areas.


She said the army and other related agencies would help affected residents where necessary and she advised people to avoid prolonged water-splashing in the hot weather because this could lead to them getting sick.

I would love to see the scientific proof that splashing water can make you sick. It is the excessive alcohol that usually makes one sick during Songkran.

BANGKOK, 16th April 2018 (NNT) - More than 10,000 vehicles have been impounded after their drivers were found to be intoxicared while driving during the first five days of this year’s Songkran holiday.

However, deputy spokesperson of the National Council for Peace and Order, Col. Sirichan Ngathong said on Monday that over the first five days of this year’s Songkran festival, there had been cooperation from all involved in enjoying the celebration in traditional ways, which had helped uphold cherished Thai culture, as the government had requested.

Col. Sirichan added that the celebration has been full of fun and happiness across the country and the NCPO wishes to express its appreciation to all event organizers, relevant offices and the public for making the special occasion so smooth and orderly.

She said that the NCPO has provided personnel to help facilitate travelers and ease any traffic congestion along main, secondary and short-cut roads while ensuring the enforcement of the road safety program and the anti-drunk driving policy.

According to official statistics, authorities impounded 10,099 vehicles between April 11 and 15 for violations of the road safety program and have pressed charges against 113,450 motorcyclists and 69,898 drivers of public buses and personal vehicles.

Chiang Rai Province “Number One for Drunk Driving Arrests” as of the 5th Day of Songkran

CHIANG RAI – The accumulated death toll on the 5th day of “Songkran’s 7 dangerous days” has risen to 323, with 3,140 people hospitalized in over 3,000 road accidents across the Nation, according to the Road Safety Centre Monday.


On Sunday alone, sixty-nine people were killed and 589 hospitalized in 552 road accidents nationwide, said Damrong Limapirak, adviser to the Education Ministry, citing a report from the Road Safety Centre.


This brought the accumulated death toll from April 11 to 15 to 323. Another 3140 were injured in a total of 3,001 road accidents.


Drink-driving was stated to be the major cause of the fatal crashes 42%, followed by speeding at 26%


Motorcycles were involved in the highest number of crashes (78.53%), said Mr Damrong.


178,191 traffic offenders were arrested at 2,031 road checkpoints, including 51,488 motorcyclists without crash helmets and 46,094 people for not carrying a driving license.


With Chiang Rai, Maha Sarakham and Surin topping the list of provinces for drunk drivers caught. Thousands of offenders were immediately slapped with probation and dozens had monitoring devices attached to their ankles to keep them off the roads.


Probation Department director-general Prasarn Mahaleetrakul said on Monday that the five days saw 3,460 motorists arrested and placed on probation across the country.


Four of those cases involved reckless driving, the rest drunk driving.


Chiang Rai clocked up the most drunk-driving cases with 455, followed by Maha Sarakham at 394 and Surin at 313.

My missus won't drink water out of the fridge,she has a filtered jug on the kitchen bench.

Not drinking cold water is universal throughout Thailand. Another questionable superstition or old wives tale is drinking cold water when one is sick. My wife chides me for doing this, but she has no idea of the relief when I have a fever. One of the only things a surgeon will order after major surgery is ice chips. I never recall seeing anyone in the hospital dying from ingesting cold water or ice chips, so the Thai fear is a falsehood.

Looks as if the Thai authorities are the clear winners this year, per usual.
