Police instigated a search for a motorcycle taxi driver after a complaint from a female Turkish tourist over sexual harassment and robbery.

The 26-year-old Turkish tourist was discovered by a police officer at Bangwad Dam on Monday while he was out jogging. She was found sitting in the middle of the road.

The woman claimed that she had come from Soi Nanai in Patong at about 3am on a motorcycle taxi, expecting to be taken back to her hotel room in Patong, but the taxi driver instead brought her all the way over Patong Hill to the dam, tried to sexually assault her, and then robbed her.

She said that she had lost her bag with an iPhone 6s, Bt4,000 in cash and credit cards in the incident.

After checking the CCTV camera along the route from Patong to Kathu along with other evidence, police found that the motorcycle taxi man actually works at a hotel in Kathu – and as a motorcycle taxi driver as a part-time job.

He was apprehended and taken to his room by police with a view to locating the stolen items, followed by the place where he had dumped her bag.

His motorcycle was seized and he was taken to Kathu police station for further questioning.

The Turkish woman, 26-year-old Bihter Ucar, raised the alarm at Bang Wad Reservoir yesterday, startling people exercising at the public recreation area, who in turn called the police at 5:56am.

Officers arrived and escorted Ms Ucar to Kathu Police Station.

“Ms Ucar told us that at 3am yesterday (Mar 26) she was drunk. She took a motorbike taxi from Nanai Rd in Patong and asked the motorbike taxi to take her to Il Mare Patong Place on Phra Mettha Rd in Patong,” said Lt Col Nopparut Sukkree of the Kathu Police.

However, the motorbike driver did not take her to her hotel, he added.

“Instead, he took her to Bang Wad Dam,” he added.

“He assaulted her, but stopped when she called out for help. He stole her black iPhone 6s, B4,000 cash and credit cards,” Col Nopparut said.

“Ms Ucar told us that she came to Phuket last year, but this time was she was travelling alone,” Col Nopparut noted.

I remain astonished by the antics of tourists, principally single women travelling alone, who will in a third world country where the average wage is a mere 400 baht a day get on the back of a motorcy driven by a total stranger at 0300 hrs dressed in nothing but skimpy attire leaving nothing to the imagination after a night out.

Unfuckingbelievable really but I suppose it is a testament to the success of the Thai PR machine which presents the average Thai to be a grinning, cuddly, cute hobbit-like creature whose entire raison d'ętre is to please foreigners.

The photo looks a bit later than 6 am, but nonetheless, 3 hours sitting on the road?
