BANGKOK, 26 March 2018 (NNT) – The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS) organized a working group meeting on the issue of Lat Prao canal trespassing.

Surasak Srisak, assistant to the Minister of Social Development and Human Security, chaired the working group meeting on the issue participated by acting Director-General of the Public Relations Department Lt Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd.

The ministerial assistant said the government intended to renovate the conditions of canalside communities to enhance the villagers' livelihood and solve the flooding through Pracharat housing projects and the construction of flood walls.

The working group allowed related agencies to follow up on progress in the projects and to address obstacles, one of which being the perception among the villagers who refused to relocate as they believe they have the rights over the land on which they live and the costs of the planned demolition.

Some 20 percent of all villagers in the area are currently refusing to be relocated, while the Public Relations Department is working to help communicate with the villagers on the regulations and compensation to which they are entitled.

Officials considered requests to increase the compensation pay, a subject which will have to be proposed to the government for the allocation of an additional budget.

The awareness commission has proposed the establishment of a Damrongtham center in the area to gather information from the villagers to better solve the issue and allow for a more direct communication with them.
