BANGKOK, 15 March 2018 (NNT) – The Tourist Police Bureau have arrested five people for working as illegal tour guides on Rattanakosin Island, Bangkok.

After receiving complaints from licensed tour guides around the Grand Palace, the Deputy Commissioner of the Tourist Police Bureau, Pol. Maj. Gen. Surachet Hakpal, led a team of officers to patrol the area and track down the unlicensed guides. The team arrested five unlicensed tour guides who have been charged for the violation of the Tourism and Guide Registration Act.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Surachet said most illegal guides are foreigners who often hold fake licenses. At present, the tour guide profession is only reserved for Thai citizens.

Twenty-four taxi and tuk-tuk drivers have also been arrested on this occasion for the violation of the Land Transport Act by failing to wear appropriate uniform and refusing service to passengers.

Another arrests has been made against a 28-year-old Myanmar national at the Erawan Shrine in Bangkok, as he was leading a group of tourists using an illicitly modified tour guide ID. Further investigation shows he entered Thailand illegally.
