BANGKOK, 9 March 2018 (NNT) – A total of 29 iris scanners are currently available for the registration of migrant workers' biometrics, said Labor Minister Adul Saengsingkaew.

The Ministry of Labor held a meeting of officials concerns to follow up on the registration of migrant workers biometrics, and the management of migrant workers database at One Stop Service (OSS) centers.

The labor minister said the biometrics registration has been performed with some 90,000 migrant workers in fishery sector, with about 100,000 others yet to follow suit.

To better provide registration to remaining workers, the Ministry of Labor will dispatch mobile teams to provide services at a dozen locations in Samut Sakhorn, which locates the largest number of migrant workers in fishing industry, as well as in Samut Prakarn, Rayong, Ranong, Pattani, Prachuap Khiri Khan, and Chumporn.

Those 29 iris scanners currently in use for the registration, are sufficient for the task without procuring additional devices though new devices might be rented to replace the broken ones.

He said One Stop Service (OSS) centers across the country have to register 1.3 million migrant workers, about 900,000 of whom being migrant workers who have already passed the nationality verification, and 600,000 others pending such process.

Nationality-verified workers will pass through a quicker process to acquire their visa and work permit for them to work until 2020, while those pending the nationality verification are encouraged to get it done in time in order to request for a proper visa and work permit.
