Large volume of Chiang Mai onions now on market demands

CHIANG MAI, 24 February 2018 (NNT) - Chiang Mai Provincial Office of Agriculture and Cooperatives disclosed that a large volume of onions from Chiang Mai is now on market demands.

Chiang Mai Provincial Office of Agriculture and Cooperatives Head Somphol Saenkham disclosed that the onion farming area in the northern province covers a total area of 6,795 rai and the average yield per rai is about 4,000 to 4,500 kilograms.

Onions can be harvested from January to April. Chiang Mai has already harvested about 4,710 rai of onions or 69 percent of the total onion farming area and their prices are much lower than the beginning of the harvest season.

However, government agencies have jointly discussed ways to solve the onion price slump and alleviate the suffering of the onion growers.

Whether it's rubber, onions, rice, farmed shrimp or fish...they always have this problem.
How about interceding BEFORE the farmers go crazy when prices are high and advise them not to ALL start planting XYZ, on ALL their land. Diversification on the land and learning not to fall for temprorary high prices will go a long way to help farmers.
    It's the same with shops.
A baby things shop opens, people see it looks successful, and 6 months later there's 3 more baby things shops within 100 metres. They don't even think that if a baby things shop is successful, maybe open one, but somewhere there is not the competition.
Driving along the highway; 5 vendors in a row selling the same thing...and not one of them thinks to sell from across the road to all the other way traffic.

I don't know about onions, they need to wake up and smell the coffee.

If onions aren't selling grow something else.

    I said it before:

    Onions $2-2.50/Kg

    Pine Nuts: $40-50/Kg

    What are they waiting for?

    This is maybe why?

Onions grown from last harvest’ bulblets somewhere between 25 and 40 days.
Onions grown from seed take longer, about 6 months. Some onions take longer but never longer than 2 growing seasons.

The pine trees (genus Pinus) are slow-growing. Some species need 2 to 3 decades to grow to the size where they start to produce their first cones. A pine cone needs somewhere between 7 and 10 months to grow, than it needs up to 2 years to fully mature and shed it seeds.

Might as well plant some now and live off the weed crop until they start producing, rather than losing money on your onions.

Most Thais have a problem planning something next month. How many could plan 2 to 3 decades.
