PMO looks into complaints from Mae Hong Son district

MAE HONG SON, 11th January 2018 (NNT) – A Prime Minister’s Office committee on remedying public problems has launched a fact-finding mission in Mae Sariang district of Mae Hong Son province following various complaints by locals.

Special Inspector General of the Prime Minister’s Office, Pol Lt Col Pongin Intharakao is leading the committee in Mae Sariang. Locals from the area recently gathered at the Prime Minister’s Office to lament increased erosion they say was caused by local businesses extracting sand from the Yuam River. They said the erosion has altered the river’s flow and resulted in damage to rice and other fields. The complainants and business operators have been called to provide insights into the situation.

Pol Lt Col Pongin said initially his committee has recommended the area’s residents lodge their complaint with the Marine Department, which oversees issues to do with the nation’s rivers and has the authority to forward the issue to police. He added that as licenses for business operations along the Yuam River are to expire this January 31, the local administrative office will have to hold public forums before new licenses can be issued, providing an opportunity for the people to voice any grievances. On the river’s change in flow, he said his committee will continue to investigate if there are any other circumstances for such a shift.
