NONG KHAI, 4th December 2017 (NNT) – Upper regions of Thailand will continue to feel winter breezes as tourists flock to Doi Inthanon in Chiang Mai; meanwhile, fish farmers in Nong Khai are coping with strong currents in the Mekong River.

Due to the cold spell, coupled with gusty winds, fish farms in the Mekong River in the northeastern province of Nong Khai are being impacted by strong currents. To reduce fatalities among their fish, some farmers have had to relocate their fish cages closer to the shore and secure the cages more tightly to prevent them from being swept away.

Fishermen in some riverside communities have been forced to suspend their fishing activities for safety reasons. According to reports, the strong winds have also damaged many fishing nets installed in the river.

Up north, hoarfrost has been found atop Doi Inthanon in Chiang Mai province, attracting more than 13,000 visitors to the country’s highest peak over the past weekend. Besides, many are making their way up the mountain to witness the sea of mist at sunrise as temperatures there plunge to as low as 3 degrees Celsius.

The Meteorological Department earlier issued a forecast, indicating a drop in temperatures of 2-3 degrees Celsius in the upper parts of Thailand during the period December 3-5. The atmosphere is expected to rebound by 1-3 degrees on December 6-7 before another 2-3 degree drop on December 8-9.
