Civil groups push for enforcement of alcohol-free zoning laws

BANGKOK, 29 November 2017 (NNT) - Over 80 educational institutions have pushed for zoning laws to restrict alcohol sales near schools.

The Alcohol Watch Group partnered with over 80 educational institutions to organize a seminar in response to large shopping malls holding alcohol-related events. The seminar was attended by over 100 students and teachers.

Titichai Dungklang, the leader of an anti-alcohol youth network based in Nakhon Ratchasima province, said that businesses have petitioned to reduce alcohol-free zones near universities, in order for shopping malls to be able to sell alcohol. He also revealed plans for beer gardens that include unlicensed vendors. In response, the youth group submitted a petition to the National Legislative Assembly, the Ministry of Interior, and the Office of the Prime Minister to declare their opposition to the proposed zone reduction.

Akhom Uamsamang of the Excise Department said that businesses selling alcoholic beverages in the alcohol-free zones are subject to one year in prison and a fine not exceeding 20,000 baht. He affirmed the department's stance not to issue new permits to businesses within the alcohol-free zones.

I used to watch the football on big screen at the local shopping mall. The waitresses were hot, dressed in their beer uniforms. But, as the crackdown continues on vices, the more people just stay indoors.

But it's encouraging to see that the west is starting to legalise cannabis. Maybe a Thai youth group could petition the government about this.

    Amazing isn't it?

The silly fuckers don't actually address the problem, which is people selling alcohol to minors, but just come up with these numbskulls schemes that will just move the business elsewhere.

Alcohol consuming minors are still a rare commodity here, Harry. A cultural extension.
Not an epidemic as one might find in other places.

Well if that's true why are so many people getting in fucking tizzy about it Jeff?

Or have you not read about the busts that happen when the bars serving underage drinkers don't pay their tea money?

If you don't enforce laws, it's fucking pointless having them.

There is a great article here that explains how the laws are *supposed* to work, but of course the lazy fucking somchais are more interested in trousering their backhanders than silly little things like enforcing laws.

But if you really want to sum up Thailand's real attitude, then look at this article from the post that highlights an organisation called, laughably, "The Thai Foundation for Responsible Drinking" (!).

In the article they offer this:

To learn more about underage drinking and how to protect teenagers from alcohol abuse, visit TFRD at http://www.thinkb4drink-tfrd.com
In typical Thai fashion, the website is fucked and none of the mongs have probably even noticed, but have a look at the domain it tries to go to!
