BANGKOK, 29 November 2017 (NNT) - Over 80 educational institutions have pushed for zoning laws to restrict alcohol sales near schools.
The Alcohol Watch Group partnered with over 80 educational institutions to organize a seminar in response to large shopping malls holding alcohol-related events. The seminar was attended by over 100 students and teachers.
Titichai Dungklang, the leader of an anti-alcohol youth network based in Nakhon Ratchasima province, said that businesses have petitioned to reduce alcohol-free zones near universities, in order for shopping malls to be able to sell alcohol. He also revealed plans for beer gardens that include unlicensed vendors. In response, the youth group submitted a petition to the National Legislative Assembly, the Ministry of Interior, and the Office of the Prime Minister to declare their opposition to the proposed zone reduction.
Akhom Uamsamang of the Excise Department said that businesses selling alcoholic beverages in the alcohol-free zones are subject to one year in prison and a fine not exceeding 20,000 baht. He affirmed the department's stance not to issue new permits to businesses within the alcohol-free zones.
