Thailand looking at World Number One for traffic deaths

It's a Google translation from the Thai but you get the idea.

BANGKOK, Nov. 13 - The Report on Road Safety Year in 2559, 2560 found the death toll from road accidents increased by nearly 3,000 scholars suggest might Thailand No. 1 of the world's highest death toll.

I can only assume, from the systemic and seemingly deliberate inaction that's got us here, somewhere in Bangkok at the moment someone is doing a little fist pump.

60 road fatalities a day on average is the number that gets bantered about regularly. As someone who drives pretty much every day here I don't believe that, they're so fucking stupid and suicidal when in control of anything motorised it must be more.

I expect the farangs who finally die abroad aren't in the figures or refugees/stateless.
I'm sure they can get the title with one more push.

They are of course actively encouraging it

    1 Endemic corruption
2 Rich immune even from mowing down a cop
3 Non enforcement of Crash helmets
4 Allowing unlit uninsured metal boxes manned by drunken farmers to drive wrong side of divided highways

I could go on but anyone who drives sees it daily
Also I assume all those school kids on bikes have zero insurance.
My tip is keep of the roads at night, the happy hour in the country involves a few shots of lao Khao strong enough to drive you to distraction

Of course the other evidence is a visit to any hospital.
I guess it's all calmer and Karma and in next life perhaps they'll come back as Snails, or Slow Vaks

Not sure on the technicalities but cauusing electronic devices to stop when engine running be a good start, I see half the motorcycles and cars here are chatting away on a mobile or watching a satnav

Of course not much point in using the windscreen littered with Football flags , stickerd, lucky chatterkoms and buddhas , Saw a truck 2 days ago with a capret and peephole like a Burqa no doubt as a sunblind !

They obscure data by manipulating the criteria. I believe they still exclude deaths arising from RTAs if the death occurs after overnight hospitalisation. DOAs and in situ deaths make the annual count but even then collection is suspect.

The international institutions habitually record the death count to be in the region of 26,000+ annually.

I heard that a group of Thai people gathered in front of LTD cheering "Thailand number ooone"... and demanding that a new hub was set up accordingly.

One member may have stated "we could have reached the top quickly if authorities hadn't fancy counting practices of road deaths..."

Exactly. They have done a good job of manipulating the data to keep themselves out of the number one position, when in reality, they have been number one for many years. Once they correct the data, if they ever do, in their minds they will be proud being named number one in this category.

I haven't seen the latest Thai reports. The media usually refer to the most recent WHO report from 2015, based on data from 2012/2013. They have a methodology of collecting data from different sources: for example Thai Highways and Thai Health Service have different totals. Then they adjust for how each country counts, or doesn't count, victims. Then they add a subjective adjustment based on reputed expert assessments. Probably it is the best SWAG available. That last report gave the Thai death count as 24,237 persons.
Data are here: WHO | Country Profiles 2015
Whatever the exact number, it is a shocking waste of human life.

Taking the life of an entitled, unqualified, uninsured driver who is watching you tube vids on his phone while drunk, speeding and not wearing a seatbelt, is not a waste. It’s karma.

This FB group gets updated with total driving fuckwittery daily, hourly at times. It's not for the faint of heart, but just when you think there couldn't be any more stupid ways to crash and/or die on the roads here another dash-cam or CCTV clip gets posted and all bets are off.

As a cyclist in a rural environment things are so bad I'm now in the process of obtaining a helmet cam to make sure that when shit happens, and it undoubtedly will, I can take action against the cnut that I have an accident with.

A woman on a m/c pulls out in front of me today and nearly wrote me off. She knew what she did as her head was bobbing up and down, faster than a yo yo, in a show of saying sorry. Always seems to be the women on m/c out here that one has to watch out for.

    Different people different rules.

Police said "he has right to refuse alcohol breath test", claims witness to horrific dragging of security guard

CCTV footage showed the car - driven by a doctor attached to the department of public health - running over the security man who had been closing a gate against traffic.

The guard was shown under the wheels of the car. The driver makes no effort to get out.

He just keeps going over the man dragging him along the road.

The guard is in a coma after two operations on his brain to try and save his life. He was named as Somchai "Nat" Yamdee who also works at the department of public health. He is usually stationed at gate 4 but was on his way to gate 2.

Reporters at the scene noticed damage to a pillar and the gate itself. The front of the car was seen severely dented.

Friends of the victim issued a statement saying that Nat had been in his job for four years and always helped others.

They said that the driver of the car is a famous doctor:

"Does the doctor think that a security man is a piece of trash?", they asked Daily News. "Does he think that he is actually a human being? How can he help the sick if he does this?"

"What is his heart made of?," they continued amid fears that the status of the doctor would make it possible for him to avoid the rap.

Colleagues of the victim heard his cries and are believed to have witnessed the car dragging their friend along the road.

    The incident happened on Friday.

The department of public health identified the driver as Dr Yorn Chiranakhon, who reportedly refused a breathalyser test at the scene, despite admitting his involvement in the accident.

Police said they will charge Dr Yorn with drunk driving, reckless driving and causing injury.

Many called for the doctor to be immediately barred from practice.

I'd suggest you wear the proper cycling attire as demonstrated by these nitwits.

That way said women on motosais will fall off laughing before they reach you, thus allowing you safe passage.

    Here's a start

Cameras installed to catch motorists changing lanes incorrectly

Traffic police will start using cameras to capture motorists illegally changing lanes at 13 flyovers and one tunnel in Bangkok at the end of this month.

^Yeah. So pissed/drugged up Somchai can barrel along in his pick-up at 150 kph in an 80 zone with 8 people in the rear tray and 6 in the cab (none wearing a seat belt) but as long as he doesn't change lanes, he's good to go. They're totally clueless.

The carnage will not only continue, it will escalate.

What action would you take? I got hit by a bus, spun 540 degrees ending up in my lane facing the other way against his front offside also in my lane. Fortunately I had respectable Thais in my car as witnesses + pics showed the bus clearly in my lane, and best I could get was knock for knock. No Thais and it would have been down to me.

In rural parts a cam is better than no cam, but you would still have a tough job with action against a local retard esp as most families are connected with the bib or other officials and those that aren't have nothing to lose.

I see your point but if there is any chance of taking action against the wanker that causes the accident then I will. I too have been involved in accidents due to Thai stupidity. I even posted a dashcam video of one on here. I didn't get anywhere with regards to the other motorist getting prosecuted but I didn't get prosecuted either even though I hit the motorcyclist from behind. If I hadn't had the dashcam them I'm sure I would have been.

A friend and neighbour recently got clattered from behind by a woman on a motorcy. She was texting while riding..
Fortunately for him, he just got a few scrapes and bruises, whilst she got a broken arm. Result.

Basically, motorbikes here are a population / unemployment control method. On a bicycle you are even lower on the feudalistic food chain. Get a dayglo hot fucking pink lycra cycling suit and an air horn. (Sawn-off shotgun optional).
