TOT to complete Village Internet project this year

BANGKOK, 5 June 2017 (NNT) – The State telecommunication agency, TOT Pcl, has expedited its work under a civil-state program to provide up to 25,000 villages nationwide with internet access, aiming to complete its work within the year.

TOT president Montchai Noosong revealed that the company will be focusing its efforts on completing its “Village Internet” civil-state program this year. The program has set a target of providing internet access to 25,000 villages, as a way of addressing social inequality.

Montchai said the company is confident that it can satisfy the government’s order to complete the task this year, barring the occurrence of any natural disasters such as flooding or forest fires.

He remarked that the project is a major mission for TOT, as it wishes to build confidence in its operations as well as contribute to uplifting the nation’s communities, thereby creating more opportunities for investment.

Currently, TOT has already installed the high-speed internet networks in over 3,000 villages and in each village, a WiFi hotspot will enable internet access free of charge. The installation process is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.

I reckon TOT are pretty good.
They've certainly provided us with a very good service.

Not often one gets to say that nowadays.

Seems to contradict itself, does it not?

The same govt establishment that wishes to promote upgraded services and product, yet extends the power and general paranoia to censor, block and control the internet [even if they don't have the technical ability] at their whim.....

    Thailand’s Village Wi-Fi Project Reaches 12,000 Locations

CHIANG RAI – Wi-Fi is the most cost-effective means of connecting the unconnected. And in Thailand, the government is doing something about it: More than 40,000 villages across Thailand are on schedule to be Wi-Fi connected by the end of 2018.

According a reliable source thus far about 12,000 villages have already been connected. About 25,000 of the total number of villages will be served by Thai telco TOT while the National Broadcasting & Telecommunications Commission will install the remaining 15,000 systems. The target service rate is 30 Mbps per village, says the Thai government. In total Thailand has about 75,000 villages.

The country-wide Wi-Fi project is being financed by Universal Service Obligation (USOF) funds. USOF is a scheme – used for example in the UK, India, and elsewhere – ensuring that remote and underserved areas are supplied with basic telecoms services through mandatory contributions from telcos. The budget for deploying village Wi-Fi across Thailand is 15 billion Baht or about $450 million US dollars. The massive Wi-Fi project is part of the larger ‘Digital Thailand’ agenda.

8 contracts signed for high-speed internet services in 3,920 “fringe” villages

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) on Thursday signed eight contracts worth about 13 billion baht with five internet providers for the installation of mobile phone and high-speed internet services in 3,920 villages in “fringe” areas.

The five internet providers which won the contracts are True Internet Corporation, TOT Public Company, Interlink Telecom Company, True Move H Universal Communications and CAT Telecom Public Company.

NBTC secretary-general Takorn Tanthasit said Thursday he expected no less than 588 villages in the so-called “fringe” areas would be able to have access to at least 30 Mbps internet service at cost not exceeding 200 baht/month within December with the remaining 2,352 villages expected to have access to the same service by April next year.

Besides the standard 30 Mbps internet service at 200 baht/month, he said that there are less expensive “universal service obligation” package for 15 Mbps service at 150 baht/month; 10 Mbps service at 100 baht/month for low-income earners.

On top of that, there will be free wi-fi service at 3,149 points in the “fringe” villages, free internet at 1,317 government offices, public schools and tambon health centres and 763 internet service centres each staffed by at least one official. The free internest service will be available for five years.

Takorn claimed that the “fringte” high-speed internet project will save the state’s coffer 624 million baht in investment from the median project price of 13,614 million baht and will benefit rural inhabitants in a way that they will have access to high-speed internet service at low prices.

    Fair question this one.

On my twice a year trips back to Perth the Internet is certainly not up to Thailand's standard and it's more expensive.

    Typical Australia innit.

I have been with TOT for many year ,As I live out in the sticks I have their Wifi-net service ( 10 down-1 up ) .
About 2 months ago a friend in the next village said TOT had just called in and said they would change him over to a Fiber Optic Service free of charge .
The next day workman were installing Fiber Optic cables in our Village so I assumed it was TOT. After 2 weeks of phone calls and emails I was getting nowhere .Then I found out the Fiber Optic cable belong to True. I phoned them and they said they had a Rep in my area.Within 3 hours someone from True had called and the young lady said workman would be there the next day to install the new Internet system. True arrived the next day at 9am installed the Fiber optic connection ,they also installed free TV for my Wife. ( she is very Happy about that )
So far so good, I have the 50 down and 20 up service and it's great ,if anything the speeds are always a little higher than that. Plus you always have the option of upgrading to a faster service but so for their 50/20 service meets my requirements .
I did have a connection problem one morning and I phoned True, they fixed the problem quickly and even phoned me later that day and apologized. True's Customer Support is far better then TOT's ( so far )

I saw it! Got installed yesterday. TrueMove did all the work. Brought in fibre to the house. Installed router/wifi and TV hookup. All free except for 600 baht for fibre over 10 meters from the utility pole.

Obvious big speed improvement over me 3g speed. Will do speed check but suspect will not be as advertised.

True came through and wired our village about 3 weeks ago. I got internet and converted my True dish to fiber. Big savings over what I was paying using an aircard.

We finally got around to doing this a few months ago - landline, wifi and broadband option router, etc. - as we're in the sticks as well.
Very secure, sound, and fast. And no stoppage or fuck-ups.
Much more better adapted for a notebook/laptop connection than a desktop PC, as all one needs to do to be mobile outside the house is to plug-in a 4G aircard......same quality connection when outside the property reach.

    Ain't terribly expensive.
Don't believe I might want to rely on TOT's charitable hotspot free service - especially if one is dependent on the on-again/off-again pitiful technical side of Thai wifi.

We've had this from TOT for a while now.
Little bloke turns up and said "Hey you want optic fiber toy you study?"
I was more than little skeptical but he assured me it would be done.
Low and behold they laid 600 mt of cable to the house and then ran cable to PC. All done.
    Haven't looked back.

    And what's the monthly?

Is True one of the contracted ISP's? If not, are they simply getting in quick before the free access comes?
It's all very confusing. Free high speed, but it costs?

The package through True is 699 for 50 mbps. If you add in Truevision Gold it is 2400 per month. TOT has not been through here offering any freebies.

Thanks. I'm confused because TOT said it's free. I'm wondering if True are getting in and getting contracts before the free connections are available.
The charges sound quite good though compared to my 1000 baht per month with 3BB and no telly or landline, and copper speeds.
