There has in the past been no security there at all, I did several months of treatment there over a few years and and was never once questioned and could wander around anywhere except the offices up top and the theaters.

I took a visiting friend who is a doctor there and showed them around and again never questioned.

I suppose that depends how you define military facility.

It is a military hospital with priority given to military personnel, all the doctors, nurses and other staff except contracted cleaners hold military rank. There is a military medical school and nursing collage attached with all of the students being military recruits.

Sketch of a suspected bomber drawn

Police have drawn the sketch of a suspected bomber based on the testimonies given by three injured witnesses who were in front of the drug dispensing room of Phra Montkutkhlao hospital when an explosive device hidden in a vase exploded on Monday.

Pol Gen Sivara Rangseepromnakul, the national deputy police chief who was placed in charge of the bombing case, said that the sketch would be used to compare with the other evidences which might provide a clue about the suspected bomber.

He admitted that the case was not easy although he insisted that the police had not reached a dead end about the case.

Regarding letters which were mailed to a hospital warning about possible bomb attacks against three hospitals, Pol Gen Srivara said that the letters were traced to be sent from postal offices in Samsen, Chatuchak and Pathumwan district which altogether have over 400 public mail boxes.

He noted that the hand writings on all the letters were different, but forensic police were attempting to check the DNAs on the letters which might or might not link to the suspected bomber.

The national deputy chief said he was not aware of a report that the military had detained a suspect, saying that police and the military were working separately.

Has anyone been arrested for the wave of bombings on the Queen's birthday last year in Hua Hin and various towns in the south? No news so far.

Why would anyone be unhappy with the coup? There will be elections soon, right?

Retired generals deny involvement in bombing of Bangkok hospital

TWO RETIRED Army generals yesterday flatly denied being behind Monday’s bomb blast at Phramongkutklao Hospital, as suggested in a media report.

General Panlop Pinmanee and General Chaisit Shinawatra, who are viewed as opposing the ruling junta, maintained that they had nothing to do with the explosion at the military-run hospital.

Panlop, a former deputy director of the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC), said that throughout his career as a professional soldier, he was well aware of the rule about never attacking a hospital even in a time of war.

“I had been in battlefields throughout my military career – from the rank of second lieutenant to full general. In war, we never do harm to hospitals or medical staff. We know the rule well,” Panlop said.

In condemning the perpetrators, he said: “They are wicked, vicious and cowardly.”

Panlop also said that he was not acquainted with militant red-shirt leader Wuthipong “Ko Tee” Kotchathammakhun, who was described by some military commanders as a suspect in the hospital bomb attack.

Woman questioned for sending three bomb warning letters

Security officials have detained a 51-year-old woman for questioning after she was found to be a person who sent three letters warning of bomb attacks at two government agencies located near Phramongkutklao hospital one month before the hospital bombing.

The three letters were sent separately to the National Cancer Institute and the Prasat Neurological Institute warning them of bomb attacks.

Both institutes are located in Phayathai area not far from Phramongkutklao hospital.

The identity of the woman was not disclosed but she was invited by the military security officials to the 11th Army Regiment for questioning.

The woman was taken from her home in Prawes area in the eastern suburb of Bangkok.

The three letters were hand written and sent to the two institutes one month before the Phramongkhutklao bomb explosion.

The woman reportedly denied any involvement in the bombing, and also the three letters.

Meanwhile the Royal Thai Police deputy commissioner Pol Gen Srivara Rangsiphramanakul yesterday called a meeting of investigators looking into the hospital bombing.

The meeting was to evaluate information collected over the weekend, which included a simulation of the attack.

A 51 year old female letter writer
    the red shirts (obviously)
    Ko Tee
    the BRN
    disgruntled military factions

    Oh, but Thaksin- gottabe right.

Suspected bomber confesses to the crime: DPM Prawit

The former engineer held in military custody on suspicion of involvement in Phra Mongkutkhlao hospital has confessed to the crime.

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan who is in charge of security affairs told Thai PBS that the suspect, a 62-year old former electrical engineer at a state enterprise, admitted to the military that he was involved in the bombing incident.

The suspect was arrested at his house in Ram-inthra area on Thursday morning when a combined force of police and military personnel raided the house. A thorough search of the house uncovered four completely-assembled pipe bombs, PVC pipes and nails.

Police said that the bomb-making materials found in the ex-engineer’s house were similar to the remnants found at the scene of explosion at the hospital.

An informed source said that Army Commander-in-Chief General Chalermchai Sitthisart was informed of the suspect’s arrest, but would let the police to tell the media.

Pol Gen Srivara Rangseepromnakul, the national deputy police chief, and Maj-Gen Vijarn Joddaeng, chief of the legal affairs of the National Council for Peace and Order will question the suspect.

Altogether 24 mostly retirees were injured in the May 22 bomb explosion, including two who were seriously injured.

Suspect says previous bombings were his work

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan said today that the 62-year-old engineer arrested for the May 22 Army hospital bombing has confessed to 3-4 bombing incidents since 2007.

However his claim has yet to investigated by authorities, he said.

But what the man disclosed to authorities was that he did it out of his hate of the military, saying he did everything alone.

But he was confirmed only to be responsible for the Phramongkutklao bombing, Gen Prawit said.

He said so far it is still not known if any military personnel was involved, but only the suspect’s wife was held in police custody for her knowledgement of the bombing.

He added that security authorities are still finding those responsible for the bombing.

Today the army chief Gen Chalermchai Sithisart also reported the bombing development to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha.

Police deepening probe into hospital bombing case

BANGKOK, 20 June 2017 (NNT) – Investigations into the bomb attack at Phramongkutklao Hospital are being expanded while authorities are looking to overhaul security measures to prevent similar incidents. A press conference has been held by Royal Thai Police Commissioner-General Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda, along with his deputies and investigative officers, concerning recent explosions in several areas of Bangkok. Following the arrest of Mr Wattana Phumaret, a former electrical engineer, for his alleged involvement in the bomb blast at Phramongkutklao Hospital, the Police Chief pointed out that initial interrogation of the suspect has suggested possible links to other bombing cases due to the use of similar bomb components. Images from CCTV cameras also showed that Mr Wattana went into the Wongsuwon waiting room after arriving at Phramongkutklao Hospital. He stayed put for one hour and a half before leaving the site only ten minutes prior to the explosion. The suspect then took a bus from the Victory Monument to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand in Nonthaburi, where he was working. Despite his confession of being the sole perpetrator of the bomb attack at the hospital, Pol Gen Chakthip has ordered responsible officers to intensify the probe in a bid to find out if there were any other persons involved. The Police Chief admitted that single-handed attacks are difficult to foresee and prevent; therefore, national security measures will have to be revamped for higher efficiency.

Thailand: Military Hospital Bomber Faces 31 Years in Prison

    Phramongkutklao Hospital Bombing-87580f5e-8ffa-4b48-9a55-a1eb7c47c94b-jpeg

A retired engineer who admitted to setting off a pipe bomb that injured 21 people at a Bangkok military hospital on the third anniversary of Thailand’s latest military coup is to spend 31 years in prison, after a court convicted and sentenced him on Wednesday.

Watana Pumret, 62, confessed to planting a bomb packed with nails that exploded on May 22 near Phra Mongkutklao Hospital’s Wongsuwan Room, which was established as a tribute to Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan, the current deputy prime minister. The blast struck an area frequented by military officials.

Wednesday’s verdict and sentencing covered all charges against Watana.

“Punishment will be for every act – life imprisonment for the explosion causing serious injuries, three years imprisonment for assembling a device that exploded, one year imprisonment for possession of explosive devices without permission and a fine of 1,000 baht (U.S. $30.65) for bringing an explosive device into a public place without permission,” the court ruled. “The defendant confessed, the penalty is reduced to half.”

The total penalty is a 27-year sentence and a 500 baht ($15.33) fine. These are added to a four-year sentence and 975 baht ($30) fine following Watana’s conviction on related charges in September.

Watana, supported by his wife and relatives, signed a form accepting the verdict. The couple hugged before he was taken off to prison.
Leaving the courtroom, Watana ignored reporters who asked if he would appeal the verdict.

In June, authorities announced that the retired engineer had confessed to setting off the bomb.

Watana said he acted alone because he despised the military-controlled government headed by Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha, the Bangkok Post reported. He said he did not want to hurt anyone, but wanted to make a statement against the government.

On May 22, 2014, Prayuth, then an army general, led a coup that toppled the government of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. He became Thailand’s 29th prime minister and appointed Prawit to two ministerial posts.

Thailand has been rocked by at least nine successful coups since 1932.
