Korea King and presenter ‘Woody’ panned over ‘unethical’ sales campaign

WIZARD SOLUTION, which imports the controversial Korea King frying pan, and its celebrity brand ambassador are facing mounting criticism and questioning about its business ethics, with suggestions that it could be breaking laws relating to consumer protection.

“The company has set an excessively high detail price [for the pan], then gives consumers a sharp discount. It may not break the law but it does obviously breach business ethics by luring consumers to believe they get a very cheap price relative to the product’s claimed high quality,” Pavida Pananond, an associate professor of International Business at Thammasat Business School, told The Nation yesterday.

She also criticised Channel 9 TV presenter Vuthithorn “Woody” Milintachinda, the face of the Korea King advertising campaign.

Business ethics? What's this? I see unsubstantiated claims in adds andvoverpricing on beauty products for example, dual pricing is considered fair game, tampering with quality as well ... you don't buy such items like vegetables and fruits at the local market, where, to be fair, I think sellers are mostly straight (prices, weighting, change) with only a few exceptions...

The sharp discount on an overinflated original price is an old technique that should ring the alarm bell anywhere, but in Thailand this thick move seems to work. In a country where it's kind of a national sport to take advantage of each other, I thought people would be more cautious....

Chemist disproves advertising claim of ‘marble’ surface on Korea King pan

The Consumer Protection Board (CPB) has ordered three agencies to carry out a detailed investigation regarding the controversial Korea King frying pan as a recent scientific assessment by a Kasetsart University academic found that the pan was not coated in marble as advertised, Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Science lecturer Jessada Denduangboripant said on Tuesday.

Jessada also said the wording used in advertisements made people believe that the pan was made of marble or coated in marble. Testing of the Korea King Diamond Series pan by Kasetsart University chemistry professor Weerachai Phutdhawong found that it did not have marble components but was merely coated with an aluminium alloy in a marble-like pattern, Jessada said.

Advertisements of Korea King cooking pans banned

The Office of Consumer Protection Board has banned the advertisements of Korea King cooking pans with immediate effect.

Mr Veerapong Boonyopas, chairman of direct sale committee, told the media on Wednesday that the OCPB found that the advertisements of the cooking pans priced at 15,000 baht and 18,000 baht apiece for the Gold and Diamond series respectively, but actually selling for 3,300 baht for two to any buyers who place an order within the first five minutes of the ad amounted to fake original pricing.

The board also found that the overstated advertisements of the cooking pan was unfair to the consumers because the specifications as advertised could not be verified and such advertisements amounted to unfair trade practice.

Regarding the advertisements that the cooking pans were laminated with eight layers of substance and 300 percent slippery without the need of cooking oil, the board discovered that the Gold series pans were laminated with just five layers while the Diamond series with just two layers.

The board is still waiting for results of more tests of the controversial pans.

Will they check every ads' claim? Because there are some claims in the cosmetics and health products ads that make me wonder why they're still acnea issues or that cancer still takes its toll....
