Locals cry foul over alleged land grab for construction of Phang-Nga Airport

Local residents suspect they have been the victims of illegal land-title registration concerning the proposed site for Phang-Nga Airport, which has resulted in relocation of the airport site onto their land.

Monchai Chinvisit, the representative of people living in Moo 3 of Tambon Bangmueng in Phang-Nga’s Takua Pa district, submitted a petition to the Provincial Damrongdhama Centre on Tuesday requesting that the authorities inspect what they claim is illegal land-deed registration over the site for Phang-Nga Airport.

He said 300 rai (48 hectares) of the land earmarked for the airport site was originally in Moo 4, which was restricted for airport construction only and no land-deed registration was allowed in the area.

However, locals later found that the ownership registration for the airport land and the site of the airport in the official document had been amended from Moo 4 to Moo 3.

As a result, Monchai stated, the people land’s in Moo 3 has been replaced with restricted land for the planned airport, leaving local residents in a position where they have lost their rights to their land.

The locals therefore want the authorities to investigate the land-deed registration and solve the problem, he stressed.

Yeah, it's too hard to use The Expropriation of Land Act. These peasants wouldn't know what it is, anyway.

That being said Phayao is nearly 100 kms from Chaig Rai airport.

And that's the only reason for it.

But like that new Chiang Mai airport a certain person tried to start (after buying all the land it was to be built on).

Not quite so blatant and a pain to the people as KL airport, 85 effing km from the city.

I have no problem with airports being outside the city as long as there is decent public transport.

There was some logic to it, a big airport site away from major urban centres that could fly late at night and allow expension. With the airport express rail link it is actually quite convenient to central KL, though Subang is still closer.

Downside was of course who actually owned the palm oil plantations and jungle it was hacked out of.
