10-year old boy accidentally shot himself dead with a handgun

A ten-year old boy accidentally shot himself to death when he unknowingly toyed with a loaded home-made handgun at his house in Kabin Buri district of Prachin Buri on Sunday.

Police who later went to the house in Tambon Lattakien to investigate the incident found the victim lying in a pool of blood with a gunshot wound on his right eye. They also found a home-made shotgun pistol falling on the floor next to the victim’s body.

The victim’s 8-year old brother told the police that he was at home with his brother after their grand parents went out. He said his brother then took out their grandfather’s pistol from concealment and toyed with it while he went to the restroom.

The boy said then he heard an explosion and dashed out of the restroom to find his brother lying on the floor.

The grandmother told police that they usually left the two kids at home alone for about 4-5 hours each day to do some odd jobs to make some extra money for the two grandchildren.

Leaving a loaded gun (or at least, a gun with bullets in the same proximity) is reckless and stupid, especially with kids about.

It should be mandatory for gun owners to store their weapons in a gun safe (under lock and key). Just like it is in NZ.

    RIP kid.

^ what do you do in NZ, in the rare emergency situation where you need your gun 911 fucking right now, and it's locked up? There isn't a realistic way to grab it immediately, any way you rationalize/situationalize it.

I get what your saying about the children thing, but everyone, all the time? Kinda defeats the purpose of having a gun in the first place.

Anyway the gun in the OP was hand made so laws and logic probably would have failed anyway.

Best time to "lock it up" or somesuch, would be when the kids are left alone...

Yeh when kids are around, lock it up of course.

But what about when there are no kids and the law says keep it locked up 24/7? Defeats the whole purpose really.

    ^ Yeah surely.

Wife has a legal Glock 19 and as far as we know there are no safe storage laws in Thailand - ie locked 24/7 etc...

There is some personal responsibility that comes with it, but TIT

These people put children on scooters, helmetless, in flip-flops on busy roads etc... so I dunno.

Remember the story of the punk who "holstered" his pistol in his pants like a gangsta after waving it around like a fool and blew his dick off...

    Very humbling, it was...

No safety catches or locks, obviously. Nice one, Grandad.

..and look at the result. A sad, splenetic old man spending his time looking for people to 'shoot down' on the internet.

We don't live in crime infested, gun toting America. Baseball bat by the front door always served me well, in Kiwi land.

Different mind-set, we don't have guns for protection per se ... we have them for sport/hunting/target practice.

By NZ law you are not supposed to own any firearm for the purpose of self defence. If the police know that you intend to use any firearm for self defence there is a good chance you will lose your firearms licence.

Come on, it's not like that in 99% of the country. I saw you mention before that you wanted to have a vacation there I think. You should, you would have a blast and there would be at least 1 more person on the planet that would see that statement is total shit.

Gotcha on the different mindset thing tho.

Gotcha so it's pointless to have it unlocked, since you can't use it for its intended purpose anyway.

I guess that probably makes guns & ammo expensive as well?

Cheapie second hand glock 19 is about $300 at home. Ammo about $15 for 50 jacketed 9mm rnds.

Nah, I am one of the few Kiwis who love America (don't tell anyone I said that).

    I know it's a cool place...

They really should restrict their gun laws though... I mean seriously.

I like how Japan views firearms... the onus is on you, to prove you are not a nut job, ready to crack, prior to allowing you the "privilege" to own a gun.

Opposite mentality of America, where it's your god given right to bear arms, and the state must prove you are a nut job to prevent you owning a gun.

Japan population 120 mil... deaths by firearms (less than 10 per year) some years zero deaths.. America has how many?

^ Yeah different strokes & stuff. I whole heartedly disagree with more restriction but that's only part of it, the other important part is being able to use it free from prosecution, at all, in most states, in legitimate self defense & home defence.

To be honest I don't have any desire to debate statistics homie

Let's just keep it as cultural differences

^ Me neither.. I don't want to push my culture onto you guys, that's not right and it's not my style.

I'm envious of the freedoms you enjoy, I'm just not envious of the consequences of said freedom, is all..

I have had a lot of firearms and always lock them away securely and partly dismantled so no-one can use them quickly, and I have few worries about theft.

Frankly having a loaded firearm about the house on the off chance of shooting a burglar is not worth the risk of an accidental discharge, which is what happened here to this poor boy.

If the neighbourhood was such that an armed burglar would visit my house, I would move.
