^ The ones I have seen looked more like flare guns. Not sure if they were 12 gauge (looked like it but possibly 20). You wouldn't shoot one unless it was last resort. Never personally seen one fired

"Thai pradit" are indeed sometimes converted flare guns, a good place to start IMHO.
There is a long tradition in the hills of homemade shotguns, little more than a metal tube with a touchhole, filled with locally made black powder and shot. They work.
