UK teacher sought as British colleague dies in Myanmar

Police in Myanmar are searching for a 25-year-old British teacher after the death of a colleague also from the UK.

Officers say Harris Binotti took a flight to Thailand on Saturday and they have requested help from Interpol.

Police said the body of a 47-year-old man, named locally as Gary Ferguson, was found with chest and head injuries at Mr Binotti's apartment in Yangon.

The dead man's wife is said to have gone to the property when he failed to return home.

The two men are reported to have been out drinking together on Friday night.

They were both working as English teachers at the Horizon International School in Yangon, in the south of the country previously known as Burma.

A spokesman for the school said Mr Ferguson had worked there for a year. Mr Binotti, who is thought to have connections to Dumfries and Aberdeen, had been employed for the past three months.

Mr Binotti's neighbours said they heard shouting and banging noises - as if a fight was taking place - in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: "We are providing help and support to the family of a British national following a death in Rangoon, Burma, and are in touch with the local authorities."

Are there any photos of this fugitive, so that when a TD sleuth spots him in a bar, he can take pics of him and post it on here.

Looks like he flew into Thailand and is hiding out here.

Wouldn't fancy being in his shoes.

If he does get himself back to Blighty Lee Aldhouse style, with both he and victim being British, can he be charged, convicted and sentenced to time in the UK, or would he have to be extradited back to Burma?

The crime took place in Myanmar. So they will have to apply for extradition. If the Death Penalty is on the table, he won't be extradited.

If it isn't, he could be, assuming there is a treaty that is.

And assuming he is, and gets a lengthy jail term, the next question is whether or not there is a reciprocal agreement to let prisoners serve a portion of their sentences back home.

Frankly I can't be arsed to look it up.

He's probably trying to figure it all out himself.

Has anybody signed up an account in the last day asking about such things?

It would be a good troll actually, sign up to a Thai forum all in a panic asking for info about being charged in the UK for serious crimes committed in Burma etc.

Apparently they haven't executed anyone official death penalty stylez since 1993 so it's unlikely that they would start again with a Brit.

Actually I posted it. It's off said nitwit's facebook page.

Although it looks to me as if he's cleaned it up and perhaps left a few false clues for the old bill, like the fact that he's got a mate in Pnomh Penh.

Friend claims international manhunt Scot was volatile when he took drugs

A SCOTS teacher suspected of killing a colleague in Myanmar would often turn nasty after going on drug-fuelled binges, a former friend has revealed.

Harris Binotti (pictured) is wanted over the death of Gary Ferguson in MyanmarHarris Binotti - wanted over the death of Gary Ferguson - regularly took illegal substances which caused him to "lose his mind" and get involved in confrontations with friends, according to a friend who knew the suspect when he studied in Aberdeen.

The source, who asked not to be named, told the Daily Express: "I honestly thought his habits would kill him - not cause him to kill someone else.."
Binotti, who was raised in Dumfries, is the subject of a cross-border manhunt after the body of Mr Ferguson, 47, was discovered in his apartment at the weekend.

Detectives believe the pair - said to be "very close friends" - became involved in a violent dispute during an all-night drinking session.

The victim's wife discovered her husband in a downtown riverside district of Yangon, the former commercial capital of the country, on Sunday morning.

It is understood he had been beaten to death, suffering serious head and chest injuries. Police do not believe a weapon was used in the attack.

Binotti, 25, fled the scene, travelled to Yangon International Airport and boarded a plane bound for Thailand at 4.30pm on Saturday.
Police believe he travelled to Bangkok and Interpol are now involved in the international manhunt for the Scot.

Binotti regularly took illegal substances which caused him to 'lose his mind' says an old friendBinotti's former friend knew the suspect when he studied engineering at Robert Gordon University in 2010, before he dropped out after 18 months.

Last night, the source said that he believed drugs were more than likely a factor in the incident.
He said: "He was a great guy and nice most of the time but too keen on the drugs.

"On the odd occasion he would lose his mind - he'd row with people for no reason.
"He liked anything and everything - cocaine, pills, weed, speed and trippy drugs like DMT [Dimenthyltryptamine] acid, that sort of thing.
"He didn't take any half measures and it sent him loopy."

Binotti often became "paranoid" and "thought that people were looking down on him", the source added.
"I honestly thought his habits would kill him - not cause him to kill someone else."

Mr Ferguson, who has family including a young son in Belfast, and Binotti worked together teaching English at the Horizon International School in Yangon.

It is understood that Mr Ferguson and his wife Supatchaya Sichompor, the mother of his child, attended a party with Binotti and his girlfriend Elsie Devolder at the Uptown Hotel in Thaketa township on Friday evening.

The victim later went back to the apartment Binotti shared with Ms Devolder.
But at 4am the next morning Ms Devolder phoned Ms Supatchaya to say that the two men were fighting.

    GETTY

Both men were teachers at Horizon International School in Yangon, MyanmarNeighbours also reported hearing arguments in the early hours of the morning but thought nothing of it as audible quarrels between Binotti and Ms Devolder were not uncommon in the two months the couple had lived in the flat.

Ms Supatchaya called her husband at 6.30am on Saturday but Binotti answered and told her that Mr Ferguson was sleeping.
She continued to call throughout the day - but received no answer.

Ms Devolder visited Ms Supatchaya's home and they returned to the apartment at 6am on Sunday when they discovered the body, the police report says.

Binotti has been named as the prime suspect by police, who are awaiting the results of Mr Ferguson's post-mortem.

The suspect's relatives in France have urged him to hand himself in, adding that the family was distraught.

Harris Binotti fled the scene and boarded a plane bound for Thailand at 4.30pm on SaturdaySpeaking from Avignon, Sylvie Binotti said: "We don't know where he is, we just want him to hand himself in."

A woman believed to be Ms Devolder was seen taking belongings from the apartment on Monday afternoon, before leaving in a taxi.

Binotti was born in Aix-en-Provence, France, but spent his childhood in Dumfries with mother Helen Stockbridge, 54.

He attended the town's Troqueer Primary School and later Dumfries Academy before moving to Aberdeen, where he worked at the Park Inn by Radisson Hotel.

In 2014, he took a job at the Balcary Bay Hotel in Kirkcudbrightshire but only lasted "a couple of weeks" with the owner saying "it hadn't worked out", adding that Binotti "had a few problems".

A fine advertisement for the International School.

The student's parents mightn't be boasting about where their child studies for the near future.
