Security at 28 airports throughout the country has been tightened up to Level 3 which is the highest level, said Mr Darun Saengchai, deputy permanent secretary of transport and acting director-general of Department of Airports, on Thursday.
Under the new security measure, officials will strictly check all baggage through X-ray scanning to look for hidden weapons or dangerous materials while hand-held bags carried on board by passengers as well as the passengers themselves will be subjected to tighter checks.
Police and troops will patrol passenger terminals and airports around the clock and all vehicles entering airports will be searched.
Mr Darun said contingency plan has already been mapped to cope with emergency situations.
Meanwhile, the Department of Airports has called on passengers and members of the public to immediately inform officials when they spotted something suspicious or baggage which are left unattended.
