Nan hit by floods, subsidence after heavy rain

WRITER: RARINTHORN PETCHAROEN AND ONLINE REPORTERS

NAN -- More than 24 hours of heavy rain caused flooding in many localities, with the Nan River and its tributaries rising rapidly and threatening to overflow and inundate villages along their banks.

In Muang district, Pha Tup village in tambon Pha Sing was flooded. Soldiers from the 38th Military Circle were sent to help residents evacuate to higher ground and remove fallen trees and other flood debris from waterways to allow better drainage.

In Tha Wang Pha district, rainwater inundated Ban Thon School and houses in tambon Chom Phra. Ban Thon School and Tha Wang Pha Pithayakhom Schools were ordered closed.

Flooding also hit Fai Mun, Don Chai and Ton Hang villages in tambon Pa Kha of Tha Wang Pha district. Village roads were underwater and impassable to small vehicles.

A number of villages in tambon Pua of Pua district had also been flooded. Water in Wa stream was rising rapidly and threatening to put farmland and houses under water.

In Wiang Sa district, people in Ban Huay Son, Pak Ngu, Tha Kham, Nasa, Boon Ruang, Khueng and Si Mongkol villages in tambon Lai Nan had been told to evacuate and move their belongings to higher ground.

A brief power blackout was reported at the Nan airport, affecting airline check-in systems. However, no flights had been cancelled.

In Chalerm Phra Kiat district, soldiers from 32nd Rangers Regiment were dispatched to Ban Huay Fong in tambon Khun Nan where it was reported the village's main road had subsided over a distance of about 100 metres.

A house had been damaged by soil subsidence and a broken power pole caused a blackout in the whole village.

Nan governor Suwat Prombut issued a warnikng that residents to be prepared for possible flooding and move their belongings, animals and vehicles to higher ground as the level of all waterways was rising.

School administrators were allowed to close their schools if necessary.

Widespread fires in dry season...floods in wet season.

Not a good year for Nan.

    Shame - lovely province.

The Nan river flows into the Sirikit Dam which is only at a usable level of 13% so any heavy rain in the Nan catchment area will help but much more is needed to ensure water security for the coming cold and dry seasons.

With the other main dam the Bhumibol Dam at only 5% usable water, unless there is major rainfall in the catchment areas of both dams very soon, it looks like another drought year.

Already seeing rising river levels, downstream, in both the Nan and Yom Rivers - could be a blessing and a curse.....

Hoping that Strolls' family is not terribly affected.

    Flash flood hits Nan province

Parts of the downtown of Nan province are submerged this morning (Monday) by runoffs from Huey Lee creek, making some of the roads in the municipal are impassable to small vehicles.

The depth of the flood water is measured between 30-50 centimeters in most of the submerged area but in certain low-lying places the water is about half of a metre deep.

Nan’s Muang district mayor Mr Suraphol Thiensoot said that the flood situation this year was as bad as that happened five years ago mainly due to continuous heavy rains and water runoffs northward of the province, steadily pushing up the water level in Nan river although the water is yet to overflow its banks.

It was reported that several houses along the Nan-Tha Wangpa road are flooded due to water runoffs Huey Pah Singh creek.

VDO: Flood eases in Nan municipal area but worsens in Wiang Sa district

Over 1,000 houses in Wiang Sa district have been flooded with different degrees of damages. Throughout Monday night, officials kept announcing to warn residents to move their valuables to higher ground.

Meanwhile, officials and residents help guard a two-metre high sandbagged flood barrier erected in Tambon Wiang Sa for fear that it might collapse from the force of the surging flood water.

Water pumps have been running throughout the night to pump water out.

Irrigation officials in Nan anticipated that water level this afternoon would increase and people living in low-lying areas were told to get ready for evacuation to safer places.

Residents in five communities in Nan namely Phumin, Tha Lee, Phraya Phu, Pong Payom and Ming Muang have been with electricity since Monday night until today.

The current flood in Nan was described as the worst in ten years. But the plus side of the flood is that all the runoff will finally flow into the Sirikit dam in Uttradit province which is only 23 percent full.

5 and 13%! Short of a Noah event will be another dry year.

Surely time to cut water usage next year to allow levels to recover?
