True, there's no
final consensus on which hormones and how much they play a part in gender development and preference, but on balance, the evidence (read widely) indicates that too much androgen during gestation will cause females to choose male roles and toys as they develop.
A surfeit of adrenalin during gestation will block sufficient testosterone uptake for normal foetal development, causing the neonate to develop in a more gracile manner and tend towards enjoying more feminine pastimes than their more robust male counterparts.
Higher than normal adrenalin levels in the mother during gestation results from higher than normal stress levels at the time, the adrenalin blocking normal levels of testosterone uptake by the foetus.
