BANGKOK, 27 June 2016, (NNT) - The Department of Health has warned the public about the risks of developing cancer by ingesting food from foam containers.

Department Director-General Wachira Pengchan said the containers are a health hazard, explaining that polystyrene is a carcinogen. Polystyrene is used to make Styrofoam and other plastics. The chemical can leach out of foam containers and cups in the presence of hot food or drinks. Food consumed in Styrofoam raises the chances of the human body to develop cancer.

Dr. Wachira further stated that a person who eats out of Styrofoam containers for at least one meal a day for 10 years will increase his risk of cancer by six times above normal. Polystyrene is linked to the deficiency of brain function and the nervous system. The chemical can cause weakness, irritation, neurological disorders, and in some extreme cases, organ failure.

The health official said his department has launched a campaign in collaboration with many organizations to discourage the use of foam containers. Dr. Wachira said that currently, there are 829 agencies that have successfully encouraged all of their personnel to eliminate the usage of Styrofoam. He said these organizations will be promoted as role models for the campaign.
