Plankton bloom threatens tourism at Bang Saen Beach

CHON BURI, 27 June 2016 (NNT) – Tourists are turning away from the famous Bang Saen Beach in Chon Buri province as the area has been hit by a plankton bloom, with the water turning green.

The plankton bloom has reportedly caused a decrease in oxygen in the seawater off the coast of Bang Saen. Locals are hoping that rain will fall very soon so that the water would become clearer, otherwise marine animals could start dying off. As for the current situation, the sea has turned dark green and is emitting a foul odor, driving away visitors and leaving the beach unusually quiet.

Business operators on Bang Saen Beach claimed a plankton bloom is an annual phenomenon; however, the latest occurrence is the first of this year and there has not been any sign of improvement. Many businesses, including water scooter and banana boat rentals, are feeling the pinch from the lack of customers.

Nonetheless, the operators expressed confidence that the plankton bloom will eventually ease off and Bang Saen Beach will return to its normal condition within seven days.

Institute of Marine Science warns Bang Saen residents against consuming dead fish

CHONBURI, 28 June 2016 (NNT) - The Institute of Marine Science has warned residents of Bang Saen beach against collecting dead fish for consumption after recent plankton blooms in the area.

A survey on June 28 revealed dark green waters at Bang Saen beach with a foul odor, causing tourism activity to stall. Surprisingly, no batches of dead fish have been found so far.

Officials from the institute expect that water in the area will return to its normal condition within two weeks, while warning residents against consuming any dead fish they may come across, as doing so can cause diarrhea.
