BANGKOK, 20 May 2016 (NNT) - The Department of Land Transport is going ahead with solving taxi service issues in the five popular tourist provinces and Bangkok to foster a better image of the country.
Director-General of the Department of Transport, Sanit Promwing said officials will monitor and expand service coverage to major tourist attractions in the provinces of Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Koh Samui, Phuket and Krabi. Provincial land transport offices will be instructed to coordinate with military personnel, police officers and local administrative staff in ensuring proper taxi services, operating in accordance with the demands of each province.
Since the policy’s implementation on February 3 this year, 213 taxi drivers have been arrested for violating taxi service laws. Most arrests were due to the drivers not turning on their meter pricing devices.
In Bangkok, officials have monitored shopping malls, Don Muang and Suvarnahumi airports, Yaowarat Road, Soi Nana on Sukhumvit Road, Wat Phra Kaew, Sanam Luang and public transport stations to ensure that taxi drivers adhere to taxi service laws.
Those who wish to report misconduct of taxi drivers can call the 24 hour hotline of 1584.
