Electricity usage soared to record high of 28,351.7 megawatts at 2.17 pm on Tuesday as average temperature for the whole country stood at 36.6 degree Celsius.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) said the power consumption on Tuesday broke the record of 27,639.3 megawatts registered on April 6 at 8.21 pm.

Egat said that it had anticipated a surge in power usage during the hot summer and prepared itself to meet with the increased power demand.

However, it pleaded with household consumers to use power sparingly by switching off lights which are not used, to maintain the temperature of their airconditioners at 26 degree Celsius and to unplug electrical appliances which are not used.

Egat earlier launched a power conservation campaign for two months’ period starting March 20.
