Malaysian Airlines bans check in luggage to Europe for safety reasons

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 5 — Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAB) has imposed a temporary limitation on check-in baggage on its routes to Europe starting from tonight, citing safety and a need to conserve jet fuel due to “unseasonably strong head winds” as its reasons.

Until further notice, the national airline will only allow cabin baggage up to 7kg, with Economy Class passengers allowed to bring one piece up to that weight, while Business and First Class passengers allowed to bring two pieces totaling 14kg.

“In the interest of safety, Malaysia Airlines currently operates a long route to Europe, which combined with temporary unseasonably strong head winds, is limiting the airlines’ ability to carry baggage in cargo,” the airline said in a[at]travel advisory[at]posted on its website today.

Read this earlier. Strange story. Can't they just ban fat people until the headwinds abate? I am sure fat people will fall on their swords to allow everyone else to arrive with their luggage.

I think you will find that fat people are generally good eggs once you scratch beneath the surface and I am sure decent fat people everywhere would be happy to give up their seats in a time of headwind related luggage crisis.

They haven't had much luck recently, have they? They're probably down to their last three planes.

That's what I was thinking, but to then introduce an unprecedented and thinly disguised fuel saving exercise is rather a suicidal move.

Some bright-spark bean counter probably thought this up as a way of saving on baggage handling charges. Who is going to travel long distance with hand luggage only? Unless they are taking on freight as well as passengers, which would be another good reason not to fly with them.

Headwinds affect the westerly route onward to Europe and the 1 or 2 hour extra flight is compensated for by the tailwind flight back.

A quick check and it appears it is only their 777-200 flights to Amsterdam and Paris. The a380 flights are not affected. The flights are being stopped at the end of Jan anyway and checked in luggage is being sent on a different flight. I guess if the flights are ceasing anyway they don't much care about the marketing.

Or they know how schlonky security is and cannot possibly risk another lost flight.

I suppose all those fat Seri Datuk Rjah of Punyma Hatyai' wives etc don't fancy cattle class on Air Asia so the flag carrier will keep eating taxes.

I'm sure Cocker Okker will be along after is morning flagellation to give us the head

I mean one must wonder if the Executive head who has made this decision is actually a real Businessman.

This stupid move will really turn people away from using that flight if they can find an alternative.

People will be looking for sure.

They lifted the ban today, which makes the initial decision look even worse. I used to fly MAS quite a bit but not for a few years now...not sure how long they are going to last if they pull stunts like this.

If they want to fly 777 on those routes they would be better off doing a stop enroute as per SIA with their Munich Manchester flight.

No check-in bags to Europe: Passengers help MAS save even more fuel by flying Etihad

KUALA LUMPUR: Today Malaysian Airlines passengers destined for Europe helped the carrier save jet fuel by not only not-checking their own luggage, but also by putting themselves on other carriers.

“These European headwinds are very serious,” said a MAS spokesman, “fortunately they stopped affecting our London flights once we remembered how profitable that route is. As for Amsterdam and Paris, the lighter the plane, the more fuel we save so please only bring hand luggage!”

However loyal MAS traveler Abdullah bin Bakar said he could do more to assist the troubled airline, “if my only option with MAS is to fly to Paris in Winter with a a 7kg carry on, I can help them save even more fuel by flying Etihad. It’s the very least I could do!”

A MAS spokesman welcomed the news of these Etihad airline flying, fuel saving initiatives. He said in a statement that flying nobody to Europe was good practice for next month when these routes are scrapped

Well that makes more sense doesn't it.

Just cancell the flights if they are not making a wedge.

    It's business practice 1 0 1.

Not do stupid things like telling long haul passengers they must bring only 7 KG carry on.

    Fools.

7Kg carry on barely covers the heroin stash.

A lot of these state run airlines are vanity chauffeurs for big knobs and their suckers, passengers at the back are ballast
